She-Hulk Attorney at Law Episode 1 Review: To Be a Superhero or Not?

She-Hulk Attorney at Law Episode 1 has been released after much hype and anticipation. The episode titled ‘A Normal Amount of Rage‘ has a runtime of about 35 minutes. The series is based on the comic She-Hulk, created by Stan Lee and John Buscema and is definitely up to a good start.

The live adaptation series is directed by Kat Coiro with Jessica Gao as head writer and executive producer. Starring Tatiana Maslany in the lead role, also featuring Mark Ruffalo’s return as Bruce Banner. Alongside Tim Roth, Benedict Wong, Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, Jameela Jamil, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Jon Bass boasts a massive cast ensemble.

The official synopsis of the episode reads:

Jen Walters’s world is turned upside down after a freak accident leaves her with superpowers.

-She-Hulk Attorney at Law Episode 1 Review Contain Some Spoilers-

The episode starts off with our main lead Jennifer Walters talking about the responsibilities that come with power. At this point, we don’t know if she has already gained her power as She-Hulk or if the monologue speech is the foreshadowing of what is to come. She goes on to talk about if people with power have an obligation to refrain from the misuse or duty to protect those without powers.

It turns out to be her closing argument for a case that she is representing for her law firm GLK&H and as she is about to leave for her hearing, she turns around and looks directly into the camera and addresses the ‘Hulk’ in the room. Breaking the fourth wall she asks the audience if they are curious to know about her power status.

She understands that this question will be bugging us for the whole episode, so it’s better to spill the beans about her transformation and yes, she already has transformed. In the flashback, Jen and her cousin Bruce are going somewhere, when they come face to face with a spaceship suddenly and the car topples down the road into the woods.

While trying to save Bruce from an upside-down car, his blood trickles down and drops on Jen’s open wounds and without further ado, she turns into the green personality and starts running in the woods haphazardly. That’s the quickest story of someone turning into a superhero. Roaming around, here & there, she is found by the Hulk ultimately.

From then on start their montage of trying to make Jen understand what has happened to her and how she will have to cope with everything. Set against the backdrop of an island presumably in Mexico, as they mention this in the series, the visuals are definitely amazing, can’t say the same about our Green cousins.

Talking about the VFX, the quality has certainly improved from the first released trailer which eerily resembled Fiona from the Shrek series. There are some questionable things like the change in Jennifer’s hairstyle when she transforms, which makes her look a bit fake, added with extra smooth skin.

The rugged look of Bruce looks fairly realistic but the smoothened-out face-tuned look of Jenna doesn’t sit well. On the contrary, her human persona played by Tatiana Maslany is a real treat. We all are aware of her acting prowess and she brings exactly that in her portrayal of the character. She can easily display the confidence yet vulnerability of Jennifer when needed.

A major portion of the episode is about the transformation and how she is an evolved version of Hulk but in denial of her powers. She just wants to live her own life and be normal. She has no interest in being a superhero or saving the world, but time will tell if she voluntarily steps into the hero world or helps from the sidelines.

Final Thoughts: She-Hulk Attorney at Law Episode 1

The pilot episodes are often tricky, either they are too slow to reveal important information or compress a lot in one go. This episode falls in the latter category but, I guess now that they have built the base for the character, we can see the other sides of Jennifer Walters, like being an attorney.

The episode ended with the introduction of Jameela Jamil as Titania, who will ultimately become the rival of She-Hulk. Overall, the episode was a complete package with action, adventure, humour and some digs on Captain America. We can definitely expect it to become better in coming episodes.
