In The Truthers, a shocking story unfolds as we watch a father and his daughter suspecting one another after the tragic loss of Ruth’s mother. From the start, a heartbroken Ruth can’t accept the fact that her mother would die under these circumstances, as there are several inconsistencies in the story. With her father’s paranoia also increasing day by day, she is convinced that there’s something more to the story and that Martin must’ve hurt her mother after a feud.
Much like Ruth, we, too, are left to wonder whether Martin’s conspiracy theories are simply a result of his growing age or a cover for murder. Several moments and situations hint towards Martin being the killer, although Ruth’s own growing paranoia slowly blurs the lines between reality and delusions for us as well. Every revelation raises more confusing questions, and, as the paranoia increases, everything seems like a clue against Martin.
José Coronado Delivers the Film’s Strongest Performance
Both Stéphanie Magnin and José Coronado are fantastic in their roles as both of them slowly get more and more obsessed in their own worlds and outlooks. While Martin is convinced that a pharmaceutical company is abducting and torturing children, Ruth is also living in the delusion that her mother’s death is something more than a tragic accident. Martin’s character, especially, is very interesting as he neither feels guilty nor completely innocent. Whether he’s ranting about hidden conspiracies or showcasing genuine vulnerability, his character keeps us on the edge of our seats throughout.
Meanwhile, Magnin is a grieving daughter whose own guilt surrounding her behaviour with her mother fuels her obsession to find clues where there might be none. She tries to piece coincidences together when they are simply innocuous, pushing her more towards paranoia than when she started. Their interactions also highlight how fractured their family is after Ruth left for Berlin, a situation that left her mother heartbroken.
Psychological Suspense Takes Priority Over Action
All said and done, The Truthers movie is more about escalating psychological tension than high-octane action sequences. It’s a tense family drama, wherein we question everyone’s mental stability at all times. While Ruth seems like she’s running after the right thing as she tries to uncover the mystery behind her mother’s death, Martin, too, thinks that his crazy conspiracy theories hold weight. Both are suffering from heartbreak that is making them lash out, as they are trying to blame others for their own mistakes and heartbreaks.
It’s a very interesting watch that is extremely relevant in today’s world where everything is up in the air. As a result, for viewers who like fast-paced stories with a lot of twists and turns, this might feel slow-paced.
The Ending Rewards Patient Viewers
However, it’s the somewhat open ending that makes The Truthers truly stand out. While Ruth understands the follies of her ways, she can’t stop the inevitable from happening.
