Why Does Num Return to the Criminal Underworld?
After being incarcerated and then diagnosed with a terminal illness, Num hopes to live the last year of his life in peace and atoning for his sins. Before going to prison, he was a ruthless debt collector who didn’t think twice before ending people’s lives. However, jail changed him as a person, and now, he only lives to do better for those around him. Thus, when he witnesses debt collectors brutally harassing an old woman and her young granddaughter, he takes it upon himself to help them. When they are eventually killed at Po’s hands, he vows revenge, even if it means going against his past employer, Pin.
What Happens Between Num and Po?
Num realises that the person who killed Lek was none other than Pin’s son Po, who doesn’t hesitate to kill someone. While both the men have been shaped by crime, their approach is completely different. Po embraces power and violence and believes that fear is the only way to maintain control. While Num was like him at some point, his worldview has changed completely, and now he is Po’s complete opposite. He realises that the violence that he commits leaves lasting scars and he, thus, questions the life that he has lived before.
Thus, when he clashes throughout the film, it’s not just a fight between good and bad – it’s a clash between opposing personalities and philosophies that can’t simply exist with one another. While Po refuses to change at any cost, Num seeks redemption before his time is up.
Does Num Get the Redemption He Was Looking For?
At the end of The Debt Collector, Num is able to get his redemption as the revenge that he sought for Lek’s murder is finally achieved. He not only kills Pin, but also Po, resulting in the dismantling of the vicious debt collection gang. However, the question one can’t help but ask is whether he finds the redemption he has been searching for himself, and that’s a more complex thought as he ultimately had to take the help of violence to end the matter. He cannot erase the harm that he had previously done and can’t undo the tragedies that he has himself perpetrated before he turned his life around.
The ending, thus, highlights that erasing the past doesn’t bring redemption or peace – it’s acknowledging your wrongdoings and ultimately standing up for what is right that brings true meaning.
What Does the Ending Really Mean?
The The Debt Collector ending doesn’t celebrate violence as a solution but rather showcases that sometimes, violence is the only way to bring about peace. The debt that Num carries with him focuses on the emotional guilt of past mistakes and realising the devastation that he had caused to so many people around him. Everyone around Num, him included, is in debt in one way or another thanks to their actions, and they must face the consequences sooner or later. In the end, Num realises that he must take responsibility for his past mistakes, and if defeating Po is the way to do it, regardless of the cost to himself, it’s a path that he must take to right his wrongs. There are no shocking twists, just the realisation that violence only gives way to more violence until nothing is left.
