A Shop For Killers Season 2 Review: Guns, swanky new tech and a suave Jin-man start off the highly-anticipated second season of A Shop For Killers, which returns two years after the first season left viewers enamoured with young Ji-an’s story. Starting with an explanation of where her uncle was while she was being bombarded by assassins, the series gets off to a very cool, action-packed start, leaving viewers engrossed and looking forward to what comes next.
As Jeong Ji-an finally reunites with Jeong Jin-man and gets ready to confront Babylon, the second season has many emotional ramifications for the uncle-niece relationship as they try to overcome the betrayal that Ji-an felt. With only two episodes out at the moment, the series teases viewers to look forward to something more emotional and action-packed, as the series expands on the mythology and introduces new enemies that will surely heighten the conflict.

A Shop For Killers Season 2 Review
Lee Dong-wook and Kim Hye-jun Remain the Show’s Biggest Strength
Lee Dong-wook and Kim Hye-jun continue to be the beating heart of the show, although a surprisingly low number of minutes are spent behind them. All said and done, the first two episodes are spent contextualising season 1 and understanding Babylon as a company, rather than exploring their relationship and present situation.
That being said, both actors shine whenever they are on screen as we see Ji-an’s new life in a small town where she is still experiencing the consequences of her actions from a year ago. Both Lee Dong-wook and Kim Hye-jun are fantastic as they try to overcome the horrible situation that they faced a year ago and how they are living with the guilt and responsibilities in the aftermath of the massacre.
After her performance in the first film, Kim Hye-jun is surprisingly restrained in this season, as she tries to lead a quiet life away from her uncle’s chaos. She’s clearly having a hard time coming to terms with all the murder and mayhem, and Hye-jun does a great job of bringing forth her heartbreak, fear and vulnerability. Meanwhile, Lee Dong-wook is as mystifying and engaging as ever, as we see him coming to terms with his actions and how they affected Ji-an. Behind the tough exterior, he’s a caring man who simply has a lot on his plate, and he effortlessly slips into his role as the calm yet calculating mentor.
Bigger Action, Higher Stakes
Season 2 is clearly a bigger endeavour than its predecessor. While the claustrophobic atmosphere of Ji-an’s home in season 1 was the perfect place for some fantastic action sequences to take place, season 2 takes place across various places, as we get a look into Babylon, its inner workings, as well as Ji-an’s new life in a small town. It makes the series feel more expansive, and the addition of slick gunfights, well-choreographed hand-to-hand combat and tense tactical encounters makes the experience better.
There’s not a lot of huge spectacle, and the fight sequences are well grounded and engaging. There’s a method to the madness that makes A Shop For Killer Season 2 so engaging, and it’s these moments that make it stand out from the rest.
The Mystery Continues to Build
The first two episodes do a fantastic job of letting the mystery build, leaving quite a few questions unanswered at the end of episode 2. Although a lot is said, it doesn’t give away the mystery or any concrete evidence, and it asks a few new questions that will leave your mouth agape. On top of Ji-an’s new life, where she immediately faces a new challenge, we still slowly peel back the layers behind Jin-man’s past and Babylon’s existence.
New characters are introduced with new agendas, and there’s mystery even in the most unlikely places, which comes as a shock to many. The narrative, however, remains uncomplicated and despite some shocking revelations, there’s not a moment that feels overwhelming or unnecessary.
A Slightly Slower Start Than Season 1
That being said, season 2 is definitely slower than the first season. While season 1 jumped straight into the action with Ji-an, the second season takes time to set up the premise and tries to understand the backstories before introducing new plot twists and dangers for the Jeong family. Its setup for future conflict makes it take its time, and the change of pace is refreshing if you’re not looking for something new with the new season. These moments also help establish character motivations and add important context, so overall they are important additions to what’s to come next.
Final Verdict
Either way, A Shop For Killers Season 2 is definitely a promising start that hints at something bigger and more complex than a kid trying to murder assassins. It hopefully will continue to be a stylish and addictive thriller whose smooth action sequences and emotional storytelling will keep viewers hooked. Although it has a long way to go, the season will hopefully continue to build on and elevate the experience of watching an action thriller whose emotional beats are as compelling as its stylish action sequences.
