The Truthers Ending Explained: Who Killed Ruth’s Mother and What Does the Truth Really Mean?

The Truthers Ending Explained: Spanish mystery-thriller Los creyentes arrives on Netflix with a thrilling premise. After Ruth’s mother suddenly dies under seemingly mysterious circumstances, she immediately suspects her father, Martin, of foul play. Thanks to Martin’s growing paranoia and delusions with his conspiracy theories, Ruth can’t help but wonder whether there’s more to the story than meets the eye.

As the lines between reality and fiction blur, viewers are left wondering what the truth really is and whether there’s any reality to Ruth’s claims. The truth, however, is more heartbreaking than one could’ve ever imagined. The cast includes José Coronado, Stéphanie Magnin, Alberto Olmo, Mabel Del Pozo, and Fanny Gautier, and is directed by Roger Gual, with a runtime of 106 minutes.

The Truthers Ending Explained

Why Does Ruth Suspect Martín?

After her mother dies, Ruth is immediately suspicious of Martín because of several inconsistencies between her mother’s last behaviours and a very suspicious voice note that she had left for her the night before she died. Coupled with that, Martín’s obsessive behaviour surrounding random conspiracies, Ruth is convinced from the get-go that Martín had something to do with his wife’s death – probably surrounding his conspiracies.

The film deliberately places viewers in Ruth’s perspective as every clue points towards Martín. However, it doesn’t really clearly state whether Martín had anything to do with his wife’s death.

Was Martín Really Telling the Truth?

Throughout the runtime, we are asked to believe that Martín is “crazy” because of his beliefs, and thus it’s difficult to believe his claims that he is innocent. A twist arrives towards the end when he tells the police that Ruth might have had something to do with her own mother’s death, although that is impossible. Considering the inconsistencies in her mother’s sudden death, it’s truly difficult to believe Martin, especially with the voice note that she had left behind for Ruth.

But, in the end, despite everything, Martin was telling the truth, and he had nothing to do with his wife’s death.

Who Killed Ruth’s Mother?

Continuing on the above thought, although Martin didn’t kill his wife directly, his paranoia and conspiracy theories took him to such a level that he had planned to cause a huge explosion inside a pharmaceutical company in their town, hoping to find missing children. When his wife stumbled upon this plan, she grew increasingly desperate and started to drink heavily to keep her sadness hidden, which eventually resulted in her falling in the bathroom in a drunken stupor and dying.

Why Does Ruth Finally Change Her Perspective?

After Martin goes to the police to tell them that Ruth might be behind her mother’s death, the police call Ruth to tell her this and remind her that since her father is growing old, he’s slowly losing touch with reality. Although they aren’t holding their words as gospel, they mention that for fanatics, what they think becomes the only truth, regardless of what’s right in front of them.

In a sudden moment of clarity, Ruth realises what she has been doing as well. Swept up in her grief and guilt, she hit her ageing father over the head to prove that he murdered her mother. In a way, she, too, became a fanatic – obsessed with the thought of painting her father as the murderer to assuage her own guilt. It’s a tough realisation that leaves Ruth heartbroken, and she immediately rushes to make amends with her father.

What Does the Ending Really Mean?

In the end, Martin dies after going through with his plan with Berta. A heartbroken Ruth goes back to Berlin and, one fine day, realises what happens when people refuse to see what’s right in front of them. Swarms of people are walking the streets, and some even believe that Martin is alive and planning his next move. It’s a shocking twist for her, as she can’t believe that people would be so caught up in their own delusions that they refuse to believe what’s in front of them.

The film is a gut-wrenching showcase of what happens when certainty is easily replaced by evidence and how dangerous that can be. When the going gets tough, people desperately try to find some sort of explanation, even when the explanation doesn’t make sense or is unsupported by evidence.
