Doctor X Episode 9 Review: When Medical Heroism Starts Looking Like Recklessness

Doctor X Episode 9 has viewers wondering how the drama will end, with a strong finale. So far, the drama has portrayed medical excellence and the hazards within an institution. With so many mishaps and politics that diminish the patients’ lives, we also see Su-jeong’s past haunting her. Hopefully, a good conclusion will arrive. Until then, let’s see how the current episode did.

Doctor X: Mafia in White episode 9 runtime is approx. 60 minutes. The series (닥터X: 하얀 마피아의 시대) stars Kim Ji-won, Lee Jung-eun, Son Hyun-joo, Kim Woo-seok and Lee Jin-hee in the main roles. It is directed by Lee Jung-rim.

An Extraordinary Surgery That Confuses Viewers

Su-jeong does an extremely hard surgery that is an ex vivo multivisceral autotransplantation. Given that it is complicated and needs a specialist who knows best about transplantation, she gives her best shot with just one assistant and an anaesthesiologist. She also does the surgery, hoping that the other surgeons will arrive on time to ensure the procedure goes well.

Though the surgery is successful, this scene has led many viewers to feel confused. It is a medical drama that has lots of logic, but when a doctor who isn’t a transplant specialist does her best work without proper training, it feels off. Yes, she succeeded, but that doesn’t mean she is qualified enough to perform it. And in reality, would doctors really take such a risk and leave the patient in despair? Even if the drama is fiction, it shouldn’t neglect to show the professionalism of doctors.

Lost Logic

Another criticism that this episode received is the time Su-jeong takes to finish the operation. In real life, Dr Tomoaki is the one who pioneered this particular transplant procedure, and it actually took 23 hours to finish. Whereas Su-jeong accomplishes it within 15 hours. This feels very unrealistic, and it’s exaggerated.

Even if this series is fiction, it still shows the real-life medical world; hence, the writers should have been careful when it came to portraying such a crucial surgery. If it had been shown realistically, a lot of viewers would have learned something useful from this.

Is Doctor X Running Out of Time?

Despite all this illogical and other fictitious stories, I feel like the series is running out of time. It is already the 9th episode, and the series still has only 3 episodes left before they wrap the drama on a wonderful note. So far, the series has been doing pretty well. However, if they mess up the ending, it can make all the previous episodes look meaningless.

With only two episodes reportedly remaining, we need to find Gye Su-jeong’s identity, the White Wings fire, Baraka Neema, Miss Jang’s identity, Director Bu’s motivations, the interns’ family backgrounds and Dr Jo’s surname change. But could this be pointing to Season 2? Because the storyline is thick and breaking it into 3 episodes feels rushed. If there is another season, I believe they can unwrap the mysteries properly. Let’s hope for the best.

A Complicated Road Towards the Finale

Ultimately, Doctor X Episode 9 appears to have left viewers with mixed feelings. The series continues to provide enthusiasm, but somewhere along the route, it seems to be losing the logic. Many viewers are criticising the way certain medical procedures are shown incorrectly.

Despite all this, viewers are already missing Kim Ji-won, because who knows when she will be back on screen? I personally expected her to give back-to-back hits after Queen of Tears, but she vanished and came back just like that. Hopefully, she gives us more amazing dramas soon.

With only two episodes remaining, the drama has an opportunity to address so many mysteries. Whether it can deliver a satisfying conclusion without rushing things remains its biggest challenge.
