Dead-End Job Ending Explained

The Climax: Reversing the Contract

Throughout the series, we see Hyeok-jun take on one dangerous job after another despite the nightmarish creatures that he continues to face. However, his desperation to make ends meet and give his family a better life ultimately turns into something much more complex. Eventually, Hyeok-jun, Yeon-ju and Ji-yoon face Mr S and his shadowy organisation, rebelling against their unfair practices and deadly hold on desperate people looking for a way out.

Hyeok-jun also realises that simply working to pick up a massive paycheck will not work in the long run. Just like his father, who got trapped in the scheme and ultimately “disappeared,” Hyeok-jun decides to take a different approach and rebel against this situation, so that no one else can fall into the trap of “get rich quick” schemes. On that note, Mr S even tries to manipulate Hyeok-jun into becoming a permanent manager, taking advantage of other desperate people like him. However, it doesn’t work on him, and with Yeon-ju and Ji-yoon’s help, he flips the script on him.

Eventually, Mr S is taken by the very forces he was serving after Yeon-ju opens the doors to a realm where the two dimensions of the world meet.

The Ending Explained Breakdown

Why No One Ever Truly Leaves

Mr S and the agency are the manifestation of unforgiving and predatory capitalism. The monsters around the characters represent corporate greed and toxic labour environments that push common people to the brink of death. The show highlights how, even when Hyeok-jun had recouped his losses, he continued to work on the deadly jobs to get more money. It showcases how deadly systemic traps can be and how the system is designed so that people can never leave its clutches.

The outside world remains unforgiving, hyper-competitive and inflation-ridden, where people have to push themselves past their limits to have a decent and happy life. It also showcases how psychological trauma alters the way one looks at these situations, as Hyeok-jun grew increasingly comfortable and obsessed with getting to the next job even if it costs him his life. Real-world poverty invariably drives him back to the under-the-bridge flyer.

However, there is some hope as Hyeok-jun does find his way out of the mess and into the real world after fighting the demons who threaten to take him down. With his sister’s help, he ignores the voices that tell him to go deeper into the abyss and comes back into the light… literally!

The Broken Balance & The News of Mysterious Fires

After the events, Hyeok-jun is seen working at his mother’s restaurant and living a quaint life. Apart from showing a very important conversation surrounding capitalism, the series ultimately goes back to its horror roots and showcases several fires across the city where a mysterious substance and unknown DNA have been found. It also compares the phenomenon with the Kyungil Neo World explosion incident, something that immediately attracts Hyeok-jun’s attention.

Mr S, thus, wasn’t really lying previously – sure, he was taking advantage of desperate humans but the work that Spider Staffing Agency was doing seemed legitimate. The situation further escalates when he gets a call from the unknown number, presumably the agency’s boss, who again extends the managerial position to him, mentioning that Mr S had spoken highly of him and he must think about the offer since the balance of the world has been destroyed.

Although the series doesn’t really get too deep into it, it’s implied that, with Mr S gone, none of the agency’s work has been done and that has given way for the monsters to cross into the human realm. The question thus remains – with such a shocking turn of events, will Hyeok-jun turn from oppressed to oppressor and return the world to its natural order? Or let the world be destroyed?

The Mid-Credit Scene: The Kyungil Group & “Neo World” Connection

In the mid-credit scene, we see Ji-yoon getting a text which says that she has been selected for a job at Kyungil Group, incidentally the same company where Yeon-ju worked as a textile worker as well. Considering how they treated the workers in their textile division, it’s no shock that Kyungil is a company that doesn’t think twice before exploiting its workers. It confirms what we already know: that capitalism and corporate bigwigs are the real monsters in the world who will stop at nothing until they get their profits.

Just as they did with Yoon-ju and the other workers who simply wanted human rights, Ji-yoon might also find herself in the same problem where she is exploited for her labour without proper rights. While Hyeok-jun is being pulled into managing one branch of the enterprise, Ji-yoon is being recruited from another part. It showcases how predatory the world order is, where, just to survive, people have to take help from such predatory enterprises.

The Core Metaphor: “Poverty is Scarier than Ghosts”

In the end, the real discussion is about how poverty is scarier than anything someone can face while on the job. Much like Hyeok-jun, his father, too, was ready to go to any lengths to take care of his family, a situation that ultimately took his life. The supernatural danger is none other than the hyper-exploitative labour of recent times that take advantage of people at every turn. The show constantly reminds us that, just to keep themselves afloat, people get sucked into jobs that destroy their mental and physical health, but sometimes there’s nothing one can do about it.

The series definitely requires a second season that will showcase where the siblings go from here – do they ignore the messages and live their lives or take matters into their own hands? With the world order also destroyed, will they take the responsibility on themselves to right the wrongs? What does that mean for Hyeok-jun? Will he be trapped in the job like Mr S? And what’s in it for Kyungil Group? The series leaves a ton of questions unanswered, ready to be dissected in season 2. Let’s hope we get to see it soon!
