Apocalypse Z: New World Ending Explained
What Happens at the End of Apocalypse Z: New World?
Towards the end of the film, we see a dangerous situation taking place wherein the rescuers argue over whether or not they should put their lives on the line to save the people trapped inside a bullring in Madrid. While Castro is initially apprehensive, things take a turn when the newly appointed acting president, González Escalona, arrives and takes the team to the bullring, taking Roberto along with the pretext of knowing his father’s whereabouts.
This is a significant moment for Roberto, who has spent the entire film trying to find out what happened to his father. The latter was involved in the spread of the TSJ virus in Spain, and it’s a situation that has weighed on Roberto for years. Thus, González’s offer is quite lucrative for him. However, when the team reaches the bullring, Roberto can’t leave his companions behind and decides to aid in the rescue operation instead of following González.

The decision showcases a shift in Roberto as the protagonist. While he has spent the film living with selfish agendas, in this moment, he thinks about the betterment of the people around him instead of saving himself or looking for medicines for Pritchenko. The shift showcases how people can find it within themselves to look beyond their own wants and needs thanks to the experiences that they go through, giving hope in a difficult situation.
Do Roberto and Marina Survive the Bullring Zombie Attack?
Happy to see Roberto back with them, the team goes on an impossible mission against hordes of zombies who simply want to eat them. The situation quickly gets out of hand, and although they come up with a clever plan to distract the zombies and save the survivors, it ultimately leads to a ton of soldiers’ deaths. AS things look bleak for Roberto and Marina, Pritchenko arrives to save them. Thankfully, this one selfless act results in most people staying alive.

Why Does Roberto Choose to Save the Survivors Instead of Following Escalona?
Throughout the film, we see Roberto as an uninspiring and selfish protagonist who is only interested in furthering his agenda. He steals valuables and has little interest in taking up any responsibility. However, he changes as he gets closer to Marina, who gives him a different perspective on life. Thus, while he initially agreed to go on the mission with the crew for selfish reasons, the camaraderie between the members eventually gives him a reason to stay back and help his friends instead of going off with González. The latter would’ve been a safer choice, but it wouldn’t have been the right one.
This positions Roberto’s journey as personal growth, wherein we see a more compassionate side to him. Although finding his father was important for him, he eventually was able to see beyond that and take responsibility for those around him.
Who Is González Escalona and What Is He Planning?

González Escalona is like every politician looking for an opportunity to profit, even when humanity might go extinct. Following the unrest in the Canary Islands, he becomes the country’s acting president by appealing to desperate survivors who have lost faith in the existing authorities. It’s selfish and opportunistic, as we see that he’s not interested in saving people; he only wants control.
Unfortunately, the film doesn’t focus on his motivations too well. When he asks Roberto to accompany him, the film fails to showcase why he’s interested in him beyond his father’s connection with the viral outbreak. While his character represents an important and relatable threat, it’s not established well enough to ultimately make a difference.
What Happens to the Survivors at the End?

After the rescue operation, the survivors, including the trapped humans and the military, establish the bullring as a base, sending a radio signal out that it’s a safe haven. She promises that anyone who wants shelter there will get it there before going off to the Canary Islands. This showcases that the mission has achieved something beyond just rescuing people – the group has successfully laid claim to a place that was previously occupied by the infected. The announcement also works as a form of hope to everyone who is listening; it showcases that there might be a way for them to reclaim what was theirs to begin with.
What Does the Ending of Apocalypse Z: New World Mean?

Ultimately, the ending showcases Roberto’s personal growth while highlighting how, if people band together, they can overcome the most impossible situations. While the infected threaten humans physically, political manipulation can break down the fabric of humanity. However, all of that can be overcome if people choose to do what’s right and stick by one another.
