What happens after the brothers found the gun?

After they find the gun, they talk about their father and try to understand why he would have such a weapon with him. Then they talk about whether they should try to find out what he wanted to do with the gun, as the truth can completely change their perception of their parents.

What was the new case of this episode?

In this episode, we deal with a case where a young man called Narita came to the police officers and confessed to killing an old man called Ichijo. This was a bizarre situation because the police knew that Ichijo had died from a massive heart attack. According to the reports, even though it might seem that the death was natural, Minoru stresses that they cannot rule out murder. Narita’s mother also says that she has no idea how Narita got to know about the old man and why he killed him.

Was there no connection between them?

The police found out that Narita really wanted to get into a university. And Ichijo served as the chairman of the board for the university where Narita wanted to go. Apparently, the university started to use AI in grading the entrance exams that particular year. Narita failed the exam. Makoto later reveals that Narita could not afford to apply to multiple universities and only applied to the particular university where he failed. He theorised that maybe this gave birth to some animosity for Ichijo within Narita.

Was there any development in the case of Tsuda?

Both Makoto and Minoru find out that Tsuda was hounded by debt collectors. Among Tsuda’s personal belongings, Haruko found some documents. This was the procurement list for Kashima Metal Industries.  Haruko also tells the brothers that it’s better not to learn about things that can reveal life-changing elements.

What happens when Makoto goes to talk to Narita?

Makoto realises that something is off with the Narita case. The blame kind of shifts to Narita’s mother, who could have been involved with the death as well. She also worked at the pharmacy, and could have got her hands on medicines that could harm Ichijo. Makoto then directly goes to Narita’s mother and confronts her.

Makoto reveals how she was desperate to get Narita into the university because he really had one chance. After Narita failed, she could not forgive Ichijo for failing her son, who deserved an education. Weirdly enough, as the evidence was already taken away by the garbage truck, Narita’s mother will not actually go to jail.

Did Narita actually pass?

No, Narita did not pass, and Makoto even gave him the actual result paper to prove that.

What worked and what did not work?

We learn a bit more about how Makoto and Minoru’s parents died, but the episode mainly centred around Narita. I liked that the story is starting to explore other cases instead of focusing solely on the parents’ case. Aside from that, there wasn’t really anything I particularly disliked about the episode.
