Did Motoko’s department actually get dissolved?
Motoko’s men deal with the news differently. Togusa was very worried about his future; Motoko and others just remained drunk. That is when Chief Aramaki comes to talk to her. He tells her that it was his idea to send Motoko and her troops to the orphanage for the operation. He then revealed an elaborate government plan to create a shell squad that would directly answer to the Prime Minister. The chief would run this squad.
However, unlike other departments, there will be no ranks within this department. Their main motto would be to seek out crime and nip it in the bud before it can fester. Aramaki tells Motoko how the department will do will depend on her and her men, effectively giving her the reins of this new department.
Does Motoko agree to the proposal?
Motoko readily agreed to this, and she even started giving Aramaki more respect. In this section, the comedic scenes worked as well.
What case did the group investigate in this episode?
We see Batou keeping an eye on someone from within the jungle. That is when Chief Aramaki arrives to reveal that Colonel Malles from a country called the Gavel Republic had been seeking asylum in Japan. The government must carry out a meeting with him, but they can not because of a hacker trying to sabotage their meeting. Aramaki then called Motoko back from her vacation. On the other hand, she was with her lovers when she got called to work again.
What is the background on Colonel Malles?
After his nation got democracy, its junta leader, Colonel Malles, started to reside in Japan and had been funnelling money to the rebel faction back home so that one day he could come to power again. Now the issue is that the junta still has control over its country’s platinum deposits. Now, the Japanese government has two options: Either they kick out Colonel Malles and start giving his nation aid. Or they accept Colonel Malles’ request for asylum and cut off the aid.
What did the hacker do with the HA-3 virus?
The hacker gave the Prime Minister’s interpreter the HA-3 virus. Apparently, it was a military AI created during the non-nuclear World War 4. This virus was a personality hijacker type, which is essentially not very deadly to the receiver but is still harmful enough for Motoko to hurry up.
Did Motoko finally locate the hacker?
No, in this episode, he was not caught, but Motoko came close.
What worked and what did not work?
I love that the anime doesn’t hold back and gives the audience plenty of information without overexplaining everything. It trusts its viewers to pay attention instead of spoon-feeding every detail. Thus, because of that, some parts may feel intense or difficult to follow at first. But if you watch carefully, you’ll notice just how well-written and intricately described the story is. On top of that, the animation is once again fantastic in this episode. I hardly have anything bad to say.
