Akuma Kun Review: Delivers a Devilishly Decent, Yet Demonically Dull Supernatural Adventure

Akuma Kun Review: Akuma Kun (悪魔くん) is a Japanese anime that premiered on November 9, 2023 on Netflix. Based on the manga series written and illustrated by Shigeru Mizuki, the story follows a child prodigy who appears every 10,000 years. The series is directed by Fumitoshi Oizaki alongside Junichi Sato and the screenplay and series outline is given by Hiroshi Ohnogi. The anime is produced by Encourage Films under the supervision of Sakae Shibuya and it is presented by Toei Animation.

With a total of 12 episodes, the runtime of each is approximately 20-25 minutes. Executive produced by Daichi Nagatomi, the music is given by Akio Izutsu. Yuki Kaji voices the lead character, Akuma Kun/Ichiro Umoregi and Toshio Furukawa voices Mephisto III. The show is originally shot in Japanese and is available in both English dub and subtitles.

-Akuma Kun Review Contains Some Spoilers-

The premise of the anime is intriguing, it centres around a young boy who is chosen to be ‘Akuma-kun’ and can possess the power of the demons to fight against the evil of the world and maintain a much-needed balance. However, the plot is not nearly as fascinating or new as it promises to be. It is yet another run-of-the-mill supernatural experience with similar tropes and pretentiously deep.

The main character, who is also known as Ichiro, is a boy with a realistic worldview who displays no emotions and yet is much deeper than is initially perceived. Having been raised by a demon he is closed off from the people around him and yet he is chosen to bring peace around the world. The juxtaposition is amusing, however, his realism gives him an upper hand in understanding situations better which ultimately helps his clients.

However, Ichiro is teamed up with a hybrid, half-human and half-demon colleague named Mephisto III. Their personalities are entirely opposite to each other as Mephisto chooses to look at the world with more positivity and searches for goodness within everyone. He looks beyond the given situations and delves deep into human emotions to connect with everyone around him. As a hybrid, he is invested in his human side more so as to not succumb to the powers of the demonic realm.

There is a constant push and pull among the characters which forces the audience to think beyond the surface. Ichiro is more rational in his thought process and deduces a case with logical reasoning. But Mephisto has an emotional response to most things around him and represents a side that is often overlooked. Ichiro’s cynicism and nihilism are often contested by Mephisto’s optimism which creates a delightful contrast in the plot.

Nevertheless, the plot falls short of surprising elements that keep the story exciting throughout. Moreover, it follows a formulaic story of introducing antagonists that serve no purpose in the main plot and only appear as a hurdle which is too easy for the protagonist to overcome. The twists and turns are predictable from miles ahead and although the build-ups are done phenomenally well, the revelations fall flat.

The animation captivates viewers with its exceptional animation, boasting a unique and distinctive artistic style. Every frame is meticulously crafted, showcasing a level of detail that is truly commendable. The character designs are visually striking, with each individual possessing their own distinct features and personality. Additionally, the use of vibrant colours and imaginative backgrounds further enhances the visual appeal, creating a world that feels rich and enchanting.

Akuma Kun Review: Final Thoughts

With over 12 episodes, the anime is a fun ride. Although it lacks originality, the story will manage to capture your attention with its wonderful animation, giving the audience an immersive experience. It includes themes of good and evil, love and hate, and many philosophical situations which will give rise to questions among the viewers. The voice actors bring each character to life with their effortless skills. Ending the series with a major cliffhanger, the audience might just stick around for more.

  1. Its fine…..but age of 16+ for thus childish bland and not very demonic show, thats BULLSHIT,

its should be like 7+, the demons are a bore to watch, could they pleas have more destructive powers,

65-70 % its just talking and its boring, that little half demon is the weakest demon i ever seen in all my years,

And that other emo book reading guy, he dont care about humans and summons the satan himself why???

A very fast forgettable mess to watch in one night, heck even sailor moon had scarier and better demons in the 80,and cooler magic that looked powerful,

AND WTF WITH THE BACKGROUND ITS UGLY, LIKE BAD PAINTED SHIT,

My score: 1.5 of 5 im on the 4 episode and snoring in halfsleep,
