The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Episode 9 Review- Mental Exhausion

Opening this review with the opening, it was finally back! The show seems to play fast and loose with its opening, which has always felt a little weird. It’s not like it is a bad opening in any way. On the contrary, it’s quite good! It is reminiscent of the openings of the previous era of anime, the one that lasted seemingly from Death Note to Steins Gate. It is satisfying to hear, the ebbs and flows work really well with the show and here’s hoping that it doesn’t get left off all too often, in the little time the show has left.

Talking about this specific episode, it was your typical Genius Prince outing. If you’re a fan of the show’s past work and concept, you will probably love this episode as well. There was everything that had made this series golden so far, such as the political implications and nefarious planning by external forces beyond the hero’s control. There is also the almost self-moving plot that barely even requires any input from the main characters, and when it does, it feels like they are never in any real danger.

There is also the issue of consequences, which is to say there aren’t any. Never once in this show’s history has there been any real stakes, which by itself isn’t a criticism but a factual statement. It’s fine because nothing ever needs to have stakes to justify its existence, They are fine as a bonus in the shows that need them, but there are entire genres of shows in anime with this characteristic, known among fans as “slice of life”. The Genius Prince’s Guide Episode 9 was a perfectly good slice of life episode.

Wein’s return put a great spin on things that were decent enough under Falanya. The political situation this time around is quite interesting, and the show focuses on a previously mentioned plot point, Lowa’s ascension to the imperial throne. Lowa is a great character whose dynamic with Wein is always hilarious, but that’s nothing compared to the one Wein and Ninym have. Wein and Ninym have extremely well-written chemistry that pays dividends for the writers in this episode, and there’s a very sweet moment involving the duo here.

Wein is often playing second fiddle in the storylines, but it is a role that suits him well. It puts more emphasis on the fact that he never even wanted to be a ruler in the first place and is going along with whatever situations his life puts in front of him to keep his kingdom safe enough to sell. Genius Prince Episode 9 was a great showcase for his sister and him, and he was in higher danger here than in any of his previous adventures. It is fun seeing him talk his way out of everything, and he is an extremely likeable protagonist for a likeable show.
Verdict
The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt Episode 9 was a highly entertaining episode that featured the best of what the series has to offer, which is a lot, surprisingly.
