As soon as Gwen Stefani’s song, Sweet Escape, played during the intro palette, I felt that this movie will give a 2000-ish feel. As expected, the editors present that it’s currently 2023 but also 2003. To show the difference, the actors’ dresses are the key. Peter (Ashton Kutcher) can be seen wearing jeans with chains hanging in them and a round earring, while Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) looks stunning wearing a layered blue tee shirt. Ah, it felt like I was watching Just like Heaven mixed with A Lot like Love.

We quickly move to the present, where Debbie, who lives in Los Angeles, has a son named Jack, and Peter is a famous marketer in New York. They have been friends for ages and share almost “everything”. When Debbie has an exam in New York, she fails to get a babysitter for Jack. Truth be told, Jack is 13 years old, and Debbie is pretty over-protective. To set the young man free, Peter agrees to take care of Jack while Debbie stays at his place in New York for the exam. The bond Jack and Peter share will move you.
That said, during this house exchange, they both realize what they’ve been missing all these years. So many truths are revealed, and new people also walk into their lives. However, something keeps lingering in each of them, and the ending justifies it. Coming to the plot, it is neither too unique nor a cliche. It’s a combination of a typical realisation kind-of love story but placed among adults.

Watching Ashton Kutcher without the long hair and Reese Witherspoon looking stunning as usual felt thrilling. These two actors literally ruled the 2000s with their romantic comedy movies, and seeing them together, looking all mature, will take a lot of people down memory lane. Personally, I was so happy watching them because, literally, these two were a massive part of my childhood.
Ashton Kutcher, as always, plays the goofy yet hopeless romantic character on point. He’s always aced such roles, and in this movie, he really brought back good old memories. Reese Witherspoon looked phenomenal and so adorable. She nailed her character as a protective mother while also exhibiting innocence. The other cast, like Minka (Zoe Chao), Theo (Jesse Williams), and Alicia (Tig Notaro), did an excellent job.

Minka, Peter’s ex, trying to give Debbie a good life felt almost impractical, but movies are meant to have some drama; come on. Her role is really positive, and people can learn from her. Moreover, Alicia’s character is pivotal as she is the bridge between Peter and Debbie. Plus, she’s been there for Debbie ever since, making her a gem of a friend.

Regarding the guys in Debbie’s life, two critical guys have to be talked about (not counting Peter.) Theo, the Duncan Press publisher and Zen (Steve Zahn), her neighbour. While Theo’s part is to make Debbie realise about herself, Zen is the comedy factor here. His presence really uplifts the movie’s comedy genre. Kudos to Steve Zahn for showing the viewers something they’d not expect.
