Untold The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist is a two-part documentary film directed by Ryan Duffy and Tony Vainuku, as a part of the Untold series. Untold Volume 2 is a four-week docu-series event that once again brings fresh eyes to epic tales from the wide world of sports on Netflix.

The films will premiere weekly and each film kicks off at a pivotal moment and then delves deep into what happened beyond the headlines, as told by those who lived it, to reveal the grit, resilience, heartbreak, triumph, violence, comedy and pathos beneath the sweat.

The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist, shows Manti Te’o’s life from Notre Dame to the NFL, as his future in football showed promise until a secret online relationship sent his life and career spiralling. Born into a Hawaiian paradise, All-American football standout Manti Te’o leads a simple life summed up in just three words: faith, family, and football.

College football’s golden boy could do no wrong, but when tragedy strikes, the increased scrutiny of his online relationship causes a media maelstrom that threatens his future and legacy. The film features in-depth interviews with Manti Te’o and the person behind the online identity, Ronaiah ‘Naya’ Tuiasosopo, as they talk about the events that led to this chaos.

The two-part documentary film has been an eye-opener for the viewers who are feeling sympathetic for the player, who had to go through such an ordeal in the public eye. Many viewers who remember reading about the incident in the news and maybe even partake in taking digs at him, but they now feel sorry, after knowing what went down.

Many blame the media outlets for negatively reporting the incident, which portrayed Manti as a part of the whole catfishing hoax. They point out how media reports can make or break someone’s life and career. Apart from that, viewers feel that the perpetrator doesn’t really realise how they messed up things, big time.

Some point out how Naya acted to be in a hospital and doing the act of breathing through an oxygen mask, on phone calls. They feel that she still needs some introspection and should apologise for playing with someone’s emotions in such a torturous manner. Conclusively, everyone believes that Manti truly deserves an apology for all the things that happened to him.

  1. That girlfriend’s whole family was in on this hoax. They knew what was going on and even had Manti meet the little niece after as game while he was looking forward to seeing his girlfriend for the first time. Te’o family represented themselves with divinity and brought up a respectful and mature man. The other family should be ashamed as they are all selfish attention seeking people. I hope they donate all three money they made from exploiting Manti to Te’o family or charity.
