God’s Creatures Trailer: Emily Watson is Trying to Protect Her Son in this Psychological Drama

God’s Creatures is an upcoming psychological drama film, whose trailer has been released by A24. Earlier this year, it debuted in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. The film is directed by Saela Davis & Anna Rose Holmer with a screenplay written by Shane Crowley and produced by Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly.

The story is set in a windswept fishing village, the film follows a mother who is torn between protecting her beloved son and her own sense of right and wrong. A lie she tells for him rips apart their family and close-knit community in this drama.

The stellar cast of the film God’s Creatures includes Emily Watson as Aileen O’Hara, Paul Mescal as Brian O’Hara, Aisling Franciosi as Sarah Murphy, Declan Conlon as Con O’Hara, Marion O’Dwyer as Mary Fitz, Toni O’Rourke as Erin O’Hara and others.

In the trailer, we see that Emily Watson is visited by her son Brian, played by Paul Mescal, who returns home from Australia as a surprise. His whole family including his sister, father and ailing grandfather are equally shocked to see him. In the isolated and small fishing village, the residents also wonder what their life would be like if they left like Brian.

Until the family is visited by a police officer who asks about his whereabouts on a particular day. His mother is not sure, but she lies that he was at home with her that night. He had been accused by a young woman of a heinous crime. Her daughter and husband confront her for lying and question whether she wouldn’t want to know the girl’s part.

While she wants to believe in her son, she also wants to know the truth, which might not be so easy to trace. Torn between her own beliefs and morality, it is a grim tale that questions our perceptions of the world and if relationships can change with time. The dull and dusk hues of seaside Ireland complement the story set on an isolated island, where life goe sby slowly.
