The Perfect Lie Ending Explained: The seemingly perfect lives of Bergen’s rich neighbours are exposed by the end of the series after a devastating fire kills Evert and nearly takes his entire family as well. The house fire, in fact, turns out to be only a part of the puzzle, one that exposes the real problems in society and what happens when greed overcomes family ties and close friendships.

We finally get to the bottom of the financial deception, manipulation, secret relationships and betrayals that live among perfect communities. While the outside looks elegant and glossy, the inside is absolutely rotted to the core.

The Perfect Lie Ending Explained

What Happens at the End of The Perfect Lie?

As the lies come tumbling out throughout the runtime of the series and the viewers slowly learn the volume of deceit and lies that everyone has been hiding throughout, Karen, the outsider, finally realises that she cannot live with the burden of the lies and decides to go to the police to clear her conscience, even if that means everyone will know about her affair with Simon. This is triggered when the weight of her lies starts to affect Chloe, and she refuses to keep the charade up any longer.

As a result, everyone comes out in the open, as Karen already knew about the money laundering taking place in Simon’s gym, in which Michel was also involved. With Hanneke in a coma in the hospital, she is forced to confront the reality that Patricia might be behind this attack. Hanneke is the only person who never believed that Evert set his own house on fire, and she dug through his personal and professional lives to get to the truth. As a result, she uncovered the truth as well.

With all of this on her conscience, she is forced to confront the fact that it might be Patricia who not only attacked Hanneke, but also killed Evert to keep the money laundering under wraps. Unfortunately, the truth is far more complex and disturbing.

After Simon and Patricia are arrested, Karen realises that there was something more taking place in Evert’s life and finally finds Evert’s phone in Beau’s things. There, she listens to Evert’s recording of the night that the fire killed him, and hears Babette setting the house on fire after drugging all of them.

Realising that Evert was going to leave her, and believing that he was having an affair with Hanneke, Babette decided to take matters into her own hands and commit murder-suicide. She thus drugged her family and set the house on fire, but Beau is the only person who didn’t drink his milk and thus was able to call the police. He held on to his father’s phone, realised something fishy was going on, and ultimately brought the truth to light, leading to Babette’s arrest.

Were Simon and Patricia Involved Somehow?

Simon and Patricia were not involved in Evert’s murder. That was all Babette. However, they were involved in money laundering and might have tried to kill Hanneke after she threatened to expose them. Hanneke was of the opinion that Simon and Patricia had killed Evert after he learned too much about the illegal activities and threatened to expose them, and was thus dropping hints about it in front of everyone, including the police. Unfortunately, it bit her in the back as she became the target instead.

The ending is left open as we see Hanneke waking up while Karen was visiting her, and a mysterious figure comes to her room while she is alone, carrying a balloon. We never get to know who that is or if Hanneke recovered from the incident. In the end, the series highlights the cruel irony of life – sometimes the biggest lie is the one we tell ourselves about the life we desperately want to keep. Plus, it also makes us believe that despite how well we think we know someone, they can always hold something to themselves that they don’t tell anyone, which can eventually turn dangerous.
