Balaraw: Blood Island Ending Explained
What happens at the end of Balaraw: Blood Island? Why Does Rebecca Save Sabina?
The final scene showcases Balaraw unravelling around Sabina, and as she and Bulak try to escape its deadly snare, things take a turn for the worse. The group realises that someone from Sabina’s bloodline must remain on the island for the others to depart. Desperate and without any way out, Sabina decides to sacrifice herself for the safety of the others.
Thankfully, just as things start to look hopeless, Rebecca returns and decides to take Sabina’s place, allowing the women to get out. Much like Sabina, she, too, can hear the island, and since they share blood, Rebecca gives her daughter a fighting chance at survival. As Sabina runs off, we see Rebecca and Vedasto march into the core of the mysterious tree, and a shot rings out. Although it’s not shown explicitly, the scene implies that Rebecca finally put an end to the curse that has been holding their family hostage for years.

In the end, it’s a mother’s love that saves Sabina from certain death. Rebecca knew that everything that she and Sabina had endured over the years would end with her. Thus, she let Sabina get off the island and live her life freely, choosing to sacrifice herself for her daughter’s well-being. We also understand that Sabina’s nightmares are residual memories of her time on the island, something that has haunted her for years.
What is Balaraw? What’s the Origin of the Curse?
Balaraw is a mystical island protected by ancient entities that only reveals itself to certain people under certain conditions. The island is a sentient, parasitic ecosystem and has a massive, mystical tree at its centre. The tree has a literal beating heart that demands a blood sacrifice whenever anyone wants to escape the island, something that Rebecca and her family are privy to.
In 2000, Rebecca and Vedasto led a research expedition to the island, during which their boat capsized and the duo were left stranded on the island. Eventually, Rebecca was able to escape, leaving Vedasto behind, and the latter was slowly mutated by the island’s curse over the years. Rebecca eventually returned to the island years later to find her brother after being overcome by guilt, only to realise that the brother she had once known had completely changed and probably didn’t exist anymore.

Coming to the island: it is ruled by the charismatic Ramon, who controls a group of people with his terrifying and violent powers, holding them with the promise of providing a safe sanctuary. In a shocking twist, we learn that the cult captures outsiders under the guise of giving them safe haven, only to eat them. Much like Vedasto, the cult’s members have also mutated over the years thanks to the island’s curse and have become bat-like creatures.
What does the final scene mean?

In the epilogue, two men discuss a rumour that members of a particular family can enter and exit Balaraw at will. Right then, a winged creature appears, but we don’t see anything more than that. The sequence hints at the curse existing outside of the island and, with the heart destroyed by Rebecca, it might have followed Sabina and Bulak home, considering the former has a mystical bloodline that connects her to the island. Will the curse live through Sabina now that the island is no more? The series leaves these terrifying thoughts up to our interpretation.
