The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 13 Review: Plot and Characters

The world of anime is an extremely competitive one. It has been on the rise for a while now, but for every new eye shown the beauty of this world, that’s also another eye that will compare all the current anime to the classics, which are everyone’s inevitable first watches. That means that all the new and ongoing series have to compete with not just what’s airing alongside them but also other classics in their genre.

Inevitably, this results in one of two things- Modern anime either go hard in the paint and put everything into trying to make their product a higher quality, which leads to more people giving it a look. It also leads to the more under the radar stuff becoming more niche, and instead of trying to appeal to the masses, it starts appealing to a core audience, which was always going to watch a show of that kind anyway.

The problem I had with The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 13 was that I didn’t know what kind of an audience it wanted to have. The episode was funny but not so hilarious as to draw the comedy fans. The episode was emotional but not as emotional as many other anime that are currently right now, and the show just didn’t have anything that separates it from the rest of the crop.

Don’t get it twisted, I still liked the episode. The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 13 was as subtle as a sledgehammer, but it got its point across very well while telling a compelling story. Jahy doing good and getting rewarded for it is always great to see, and there was tons of that here. Druj is also one of my favourite characters, so any episode with her becomes a little better because of that.

However, I fear that The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated risks being cast aside and forgotten if it doesn’t carve out a niche for itself because other shows do what it does better than it. I like watching this every week, but enthusiasm about it wanes every day that goes by when other, better shows air their episodes. I’m still rooting for you, Jahy-Sama. You’re still my favourite second-in-command.

The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 13 Review: Art and Music

The biggest mistake Jahy-Sama has ever made was changing the first opening to the latest one. The first one was catchy, tonally sound, and nice to the ears. Meanwhile, the current opening is, frankly speaking, embarrassing. There is way too much going on, and there are a dozen different tempos, sounds, and singers every 10 seconds, which results in a barely listenable cacophony that makes me want to commit the most cardinal sin of them all- skipping the opening.

Everything else in these two departments ranges from fine to good. The ending is great, the animation is always solid if somewhat generic, and the OSTs were fantastic in The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 13. However, I have come to despise this opening in the three times that I’ve heard it. I anticipate complaining about it every time I hear it, which shouldn’t be much more since it is getting immediately skipped.

Verdict

The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Episode 13 was a perfectly fine episode on its own, but the show, on the whole, has needed something fresh for a while now. Before you ask- no, the terrible new opening doesn’t count.
