The Perfect Lie Episode 3 Review

A Polygraph Test Changes Everything for Ji-seon and Jun-ho
Things just got a lot more interesting in this episode. First of all, bizarrely enough, Ji-seon is told that she was the one who failed the polygraph test. This was a very interesting angle because even though one cannot blindly trust such a test, it should be important enough to point out. On the other hand, Jun-ho is the one who passed the test, kind of showing that maybe he was telling the truth.
Now, if Jun-ho was an extremely calculating psychopath, there is a chance that he managed to beat the polygraph. And Ji-seon was so agitated that she failed it. But this was an interesting point that kind of puts us in a spot where we can’t blindly trust Ji-seon anymore.
Both Seem Innocent, But Someone Is Lying

The case gets complicated because you feel that both Jun-ho and Ji-seon are telling the truth. First of all, you genuinely think that something deeply disturbing happened with Ji-seon that night. On the other hand, the way Jun-ho is acting, you also feel like he is the victim in this case who is being blamed for no reason. At one point, you even think that maybe things would be fine. However, the case only escalates to a new height from which there is no return for either Jun-ho or Ji-seon.
Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin Deliver Stellar Performances

First of all, the stigma of both being an aggressor and a victim is traumatising if it is false. Thus, you feel sorry for both precisely because you do not know who the liar is. And I must mention that the makers did a tremendously good job of confusing you, so that you cannot choose, at least, till the end. Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin are equally phenomenal in their performances, making it all the more shocking when the truth is eventually revealed.
Another very important aspect of this series is how humane these characters feel. None of them feels like superficial entities written for a series. From the facial expressions to the way they interact with each other, everything makes them genuine. On top of that, the pain in their eyes also gives you insight into just how hurt they are from what is going on in their lives.
Final Thoughts

There was one particular moment when I was genuinely on the edge of my seat, and I have to applaud the makers for building such an intense thriller without relying on over-the-top shocks. The final scene was particularly twisted, leaving us with more questions than answers. Not a single thing is explicitly revealed, yet the characters’ facial expressions do all the heavy lifting. Was that moment meant to offer a clue about the culprit, or was it simply another attempt to mislead us? Either way, the ambiguity makes the scene great. All in all, I absolutely loved this episode, and I genuinely believe this is one of the best Korean thrillers I have ever watched.
