Pamela, a Love Story Recap/Review Consists of Spoilers

The documentary starts with Pamela Anderson watching a tape of her ex-husband Tommy Lee, proposing to her for the second time as the knight in shining armour. She says she was happy back then. The videos make her emotional because Pam believes it was her time to be in love. “Right now, I feel like it’s almost like I’m looking for something. I really don’t know where I’m gonna go next. I feel restless. I’m looking for anything that I can’t find,” says Anderson in a melancholic tone.

The documentary is shot in a house in Canada at Ladysmith, BC, where Pamela grew up. She is away from the glitz and glamour she was once a major part of. From the outside, one will think she is living a peaceful life. But deep down, she’s searching for life to have another meaning, for answers and is upset with how things have happened with her in the past and recently.

One thing Pamela Anderson makes clear in the documentary directed by Ryan White is that she wants to tell her life story by herself. She gets candid about getting a chance to be the big Playboy model during the 90s, being a part of Baywatch and being called the sex bomb or the sultry sex diva during that time. She was happy, high on success and had big dreams.

Pamela A Love Story 1

With a thriving career, Pamela had grabbed headlines for her happening love life. She dated several popular men, but her relationship and marriage with Tommy Lee made the most headlines. Everyone wanted to know everything about their life. The duo was wild and madly in love and had been through some best and worst days of their lives. The former Playboy model also addressed the sex tape scandal and how it wrecked her relationship, career and personal life.

The documentary humanises Pamela, who has been majorly seen as a sex symbol by almost everyone around her. From her colleagues to talk show hosts to the media, she was often bombarded with questions about her breasts, nude photoshoots, and body. The actor-model reveals how it bothered her when she was asked such questions inappropriately. There are clips of several such interviews which makes one uncomfortable.

The documentary also features her sons Brandon and Dylan Tommy Lee, who reveal how they used to get bullied due to everything that happened with their parents, especially Pamela. The sex tape fiasco impacted their life as everyone would make bad comments about their mother. In the Netflix documentary, Pamela addresses how disturbed she felt when the Hulu series Pam & Tommy was announced without her permission.

Pamela A Love Story 2

Pam & Tommy on Hulu starred Sebastian Stan and Lily James, a dark and comedic take on the sex tape controversy. Pamela and her sons are not pleased with the Hulu show’s makers’ approach to dramatise and sexualise the characters who went through hell during that time. Pamela has not yet watched the series and won’t watch it as the controversy ruined her life. She gets emotional and anxious while talking about it.

When her son Brandon Tommy Lee watches the first three episodes, he calls Pamela and tells her how they’ve tried to reason with whoever the person is who stole the tape. The phone call leaves Anderson disturbed, who says, “Now that it’s all coming up again, I feel sick from my whole stomach — from the middle of my chest all the way down to my stomach. My stomach feels right now like it’s just been punched.”

Pamela A Love Story Review: Final Thoughts

From the beginning, one can sense that the Netflix docufilm is an answer to the Hulu series that minted money out of Pamela and Tommy’s life without seeking their permission. Pamela wants to show the world that she was doing her job as a model for Playboy and other endorsements, and no controversy was created for publicity or attention. She wants us to know that deep down, she is just a human seeking love, comfort and growth.

Pamela A Love Story 3

With a Broadway play, professional life restarted for Anderson. However, she’s looking for more new experiences. She wanted to achieve all her dreams she had back then, but they were snatched away because someone decided to leak her private videos. The actor is hopeful that life will improve but is unsure when and how. Others might have made money and received praise for the Hulu series, but for Pamela, it was a traumatic reminder of her past.
