Oshi No Ko Season 2 Episode 7 Recap

This instalment kicks off with the next phase of the stage play, where the contrast between Akane and Kana takes centre stage. We also witness the emergence of the Shibuya onis and learn about the looming clash between the Shibuya and Shinjuku factions.

Within the play, Aqua squares off against the hero, while Kana rushes ahead to confront Akane, her natural rival. Their interaction is masterfully portrayed, revealing the deep-rooted conflict that prevents these two talented actresses from working harmoniously together. Beyond their contrasting personalities, they share a complicated history that has fueled their differences.

Akane once idolized Kana and aspired to be like her. However, when she finally met her role model, she was disillusioned by the reality of who Kana truly was. Kana, once a shining star, had been worn down by the adults in her life, losing the spark that had made her special. Now, Akane is determined to pull Kana back into the spotlight, hoping to restore her former brilliance so they can stand on equal footing and compete. What Akane fails to grasp is that Kana’s emotional scars are still raw, and her approach to acting is vastly different from Akane’s relentless pursuit of excellence.

Today, we get the point of view of Kana and understand her struggles in life. Apart from that, we also see Aqua deeply assessing the panic disorders that he faces from time to time.

The episode starts with Kana accepting how she has indeed taken a back seat when everyone else wants to shine at the centre of the stage. Even Taiki asks her about it but also assures that he will be there to help her in any way possible. Thus, he takes the lead, and this is where he faces off against Aqua. This might be the first time where Aqua has a proper struggle against an actor because of their overwhelming talent.

Taiki is an emotional actor who completely relies on showing himself bare in front of the audience. When facing a seasoned actor like him, Aqua, who is not accustomed to emotional acting, will fall short if he tries to go on the same path. This is why Aqua thinks of another strategy and completely mutes his expressions and emotions, showcasing a more cold-hearted acting. This temporarily balances out the situation.

On the other hand, we learn about the traumatic past that Kana faced while growing up. Her mother’s influence has been very prominent in her life, and when she became unhealthily obsessed with Kana’s stardom and its waning, things became problematic. Thus, to stay afloat in the industry, Kana decided to become an actor easy to work with.

But Aqua will not let her stay behind others anymore. If she holds the spotlight for everyone else, Aqua will be the one to turn the spotlight on her. Up until now, the tone stays consistent, but then, as we approach the finale, we are sharply reminded of what this anime truly represents, and the story takes a sudden and dramatic turn.

Verdict

I had some preconceived notions about how this episode might turn out, and for the most part, it was exactly that. But what caught me off guard is Aqua baring his fangs and openly challenging everyone in the industry to stand down as he has vengeance to achieve. I will not spoil anything anymore and would ask you to just watch it yourself.
