Witch Hat Atelier Episode 12 Review: When Magic Fails Inside the Cave

Witch Hat Atelier Episode 12 Review: Qifrey reveals the Cave’s dark history. He also explained how the once-prosperous kingdom of Romonon collapsed. However, inside the Cave, the exam becomes far more dangerous. The warped space disrupted even basic flight magic, forcing the group to rely on the terrain itself.

Did this episode explain the history of the Cave?

Yes, we got some information about the caves from Qifrey himself. He explained that long ago, in the caves, there was a prosperous kingdom called Romonon. The people there were renowned for their gold craftsmanship. However, they were very proud of their gold and started to look down upon others. Then, to keep the wealth to themselves, they made the serpent back path only to allow those whom they deem as chosen ones.

Slowly, they grew more isolated and at some point, their greed became so prominent that they started to turn against each other. In the end, the kingdom collapsed, and only the Serpentback path remained. The caves have now turned into a labyrinth where the exam is taking place.

What happens after Agott’s group enters the Cave?

After entering the caves, they find out how twisted the path towards the centre is. With the help of magic, they should be able to just fly through the whole thing, but that did not happen. When Richeh tried to fly across, she almost fell into the Cave. This was because the space inside the Cave had been completely warped. The only correct route is through the road itself.

How does Agott manage to find a way?

Agott creates water, which she uses to locate the gravity. Thus, by understanding the flow of water, she plans to navigate through the route. Richeh obviously did not like this approach because being told what to do is not something that she enjoys. There was also a reason behind this; we see that most likely, her magic was criticised by one of our old teachers. Perhaps this is the reason she hated sticking to rules so much.

Does Richeh do what she wants in the Cave?

Richeh gets into a bit of an ideological disagreement with Ennui. She states her ways of doing things and tries to show that it is wrong. Yet, Richeh proves through her magic that even if there is something that you cannot do according to the rules, you can always create your own path. She utilises her own magic to get past the first hurdle, which was very difficult.  She also comes to the rescue of Ennui, who clearly lacks the courage and self-confidence that Richeh has.

How does Ennui bypass his own lack of confidence?

Ennui comes up with a very unique idea and completely erases his own presence by covering himself in a shadow. In such a disguise, he gets more confidence, as now, no one can see him drawing his magic. This comes from a deep-rooted self-hatred within him, which is the very opposite of Richeh.

What worked and what did not work?

The episode ended on a thrilling note, with the villain finally making his appearance. We’ll have to wait until next week to see what kind of trouble he stirs up in the Cave. Other than that, it was an interesting and insightful episode.
