Rebelde Season 2 Review: The Classic Telenovela Gets a Euphoria Hangover

Rebelde Season 2 is out now and the show seems to have changed its course from being a classic telenovela adaptation to Sam Levinson’s Euphoria inspiration. Based on the Mexican telenovela of the same name that aired in 2004 and the Argentine telenovela Rebelde Way, the director of the tv series is Santiago Limón. Also known as REBƎLDE, the drama is of Mexican origin and written by Ilse Apellaniz, José Miguel Núñez, Talia Rothenberg and Pericles Sánchez.

The cast features the old favourites Azul Guaita as Jana, Lizeth Selene as Andi, Jerónimo Cantillo as Dixon, Andrea Chaparro as MJ, Franco Masini as Luka, and Sergio Mayer Mori as Esteban. The other cast members reprising in their previous roles are Giovanna Grigio as Emilia, Alejandro Puente as Sebas, Estefanía Villarreal as Director Celina Ferrer, Karla Sofía Gascón as Lourdes, and Alaide Solorzano as Laura.

There are certainly new additions to the cast for Rebelde Season 2 including Joel Isaac aka Saak as Okane and Flavio Medina as Gus Bauman. Similar to the first season, the second season also consists of eight episodes, each with a runtime of 40-50 minutes.

Rebelde Season 2: Does Love & Friendship Always End in Betrayal?

Rebelde Season 2 pretty much ditches the stereotypes wrapped in the first season and brings about some interesting developments in the narrative as well as characters, most of which none of us saw coming. With the addition of some new characters, we see our old favourites make it through another year of the Music Excellence Program (MEP) at the Elite Way School (EWS).

As another year begins at EWS, our group of six seems pretty much broken and detached. Sure, they did seem to have some fun time during the semester break but, on returning things seem more different than ever. Although Jana, Dixon, Andi and Esteban are still part of Rebelde, the breakup between Esteban and Jana seems to have shifted some dynamics. MJ’s now hanging out with Sebas and, sharing some tough glares with Jana.

Andi and Emilia’s relationship feat feels lovely. Luka is still the loner and Dixon still the bro having everyone’s back. Jana tries to keep herself and everyone together and Esteban is the new eye candy once again with his single status. With things already complicated, enters Gus Bauman, a great music producer right out of hibernation and the new director of the MEP at EWS. The director clearly does not see eye to eye with the traditions of the MEP and, straight off the bat decides that this time the students need to go solo and not as a band.

The shakey dynamics of the students turn snake-like soon enough with some heartbreaking betrayals running their course and some smokey relationships burning everyone and everything around. Okane, a new addition to the MEP, just stirs the altering dynamics and, soon enough everything changes for the worse for The Nonames and others.

But, do all friendships and love burn in betrayal or can some survive the new ambience at EWS? Well, Rebelde Season 2 bares it all, the good, bad and the ugly side of the music industry and student life that gets out of hand, more often than we would imagine it to be.

Rebelde Season 2: The Wild Turn the Characters Take

Rebelde Season 2 does not shy away from making the good guy go bad and the villain turns into a messiah. Well, almost. Esteban’s jerk game in this season is really something that makes you hate the character to the core and question why we were all rooting for him in the first place. We understand the abrupt breakup with Jana, the new information of being a Colucci and the first big shot he gets in his career but, all of the glamour to lose out the real friendships in life? Well, this is a character we are surely interested in seeing how he matures over the upcoming seasons.

MJ and Jana’s fight, no matter how reminiscent of being the Mexican Mean Girls is really confusing and tricky at times to follow. Not to mention, it drags the narrative around the edges. As for Dixon and Andi, these are the two hearts that have stayed true to what we have seen them be in the previous season. Even Luka’s character arc was a pleasant surprise to stick to and, now, that we have seen him smile due to his newfound love, we only wish to see the best for him.

It is definitely Sebas, who shocks us the most in Rebelde Season 2. He is good, he is bad and he is convincing us to stay with him. But, is it worth it by the end? Well, only how the chapters unfold will help you decide which team you are on.

Rebelde Season 2: Final Verdict

Overall, Rebelde Season 2 is a mix-up of team drama, music industry darkness and interpersonal mess that needs to be addressed. This season also rolls on certain mental health issues, drug addiction and the greed and envy that eat up a soul. It is definitely an upgrade from the previous season but, might not just be the perfect cup of tea for fans of the original telenovela.

All episodes of Rebelde Season 2 are now streaming on Netflix.
