Pinocchio Teaser: Guillermo Del Toro Reinvents the Classic in a Stop-Motion Musical

Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio is an upcoming stop-motion animated musical fantasy film which is set to be released on Netflix by the end of the year. Netflix has released the teaser trailer of the film, directed by Guillermo Del Toro and Mark Gustafson. It is based on Gris Grimly’s design from his 2002 edition of the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi.

It stars the voices of talented actors including Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Gregory Mann, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton. The synopsis of the film reads Del Toro reinvents the classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto.

This whimsical, stop-motion film follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world. The classic tale of Pinocchio is set in Italy during the 1930s. It will also mark the director’s animated feature film debut on Netflix with his lifelong passion project.

According to its creators in this story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. The character of Pinocchio is voiced by Gregory Mann, David Bradley voices Master Geppetto and Christoph Waltz as Count Volpe.

Guillermo del Toro is among the few acclaimed artists blurring the lines with increasing frequency and ease between film and television, live action and animation. He has seven years of experience as an executive producer on DreamWorks Animation feature films, including Puss in Boots, Kung Fu Panda 3, and Rise of the Guardians. His other movies include The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, Hellboy II, and The Devil’s Backbone.

The film is set to be released in selected theatres in November and later in December 2022 on Netflix.
