My Oni Girl Review: A new Netflix anime movie by director Tomotaka Shibayama is here, and I am happy to review it. Let us see how this anime movie fared and whether you should watch it.
My Oni Girl Overview
Studio Colorido’s fourth full-length movie, My Oni Girl or Suki demo Kirai na Amanojaku, is a fantasy story about a human boy and a demon girl. It is available worldwide on Netflix starting Friday, May 24.
The movie is directed by Tomotaka Shibayama, who previously worked at Studio Ghibli and directed A Whisker Away. The screenplay is written by Yuko Kakihara, known for The Apothecary Diaries and the anime Chihayafuru. Masafumi Yokota, who worked on animations for Weathering with You and The Wind Rises, is in charge of character design.
In March 2024, the movie’s title and the casting of voice actors Kensho Ono and Miyu Tomita were announced. The theme song, “Uso Janai,” and the insert song, “Blues in the Closet,” are both performed by Zutomayo.

My Oni Girl Review and Recap
Considering the same director from A Whisker Away is behind this movie, I thought that we would get a good enough anime. However, I was pretty disappointed with how this story turned out.
Here, we witness the adventure of a young boy whose life completely changes after he meets a mysterious girl. Hiiragi is your average high school boy who does not stand out from the crowd. He is a huge pushover who can not even refuse someone when they are clearly being outlandishly demanding. One of the biggest examples is when a girl from his class forces him to pretend to be her boyfriend but then dismisses him rudely when her gig gets busted in front of her friends.

Still, our hero never backs down from helping anyone in need, and he even goes to extreme lengths for someone completely unknown. This is exactly how he also meets Tsumugi, who has just come to his town because of something she must do. And this is also how the classic boy meets girl trope happens, and the movie takes off in a new direction.
If we talk about the positives of this film, it will have to be the visuals. The animation is beautiful to look at, with seamless and smooth transitions. Apart from that, one of the biggest highlights of this movie is how well it showcases the landmarks and beautifully portrays Yamagata Prefecture’s mountainous allure. The colour scheme used is also very pleasing to the eyes and transfers you to this fantastical world altogether.

Where the movie severely lacked is the storyline and character development. Whatever situation our protagonists were becoming a part of felt unimportant and inconsequential. Even the people they meet on their journey hardly contribute anything to the story’s overall growth. Lastly, the chemistry between the protagonists felt forced as their relationship was not at all properly explored or developed.
Right from the moment Hiiragi meets Tsumugi to the conclusion, their entire time together is pretty poorly materialised, which fails to convince the audience of their sincerity towards each other. By the end, you ask yourself why was Hiiragi so insistent on helping the girl anyway. Or why would he leave with someone he barely knows without informing even his parents? Plus, they could have done so much more by exploring the mythology behind the existence of Onis, however, they just left it as a secondary element.

Verdict
All in all, this was a below-average experience for me as I did not feel the authenticity in the execution and found the plot uninteresting with a predictable conclusion. But that does not mean that it’s a bad movie. It has its positive sides, which makes it a good one-time watch for everyone.

So chibli ghibli movies whatever they called usually is alot of fantasy and amazing stuff,
This is just a boy meets girls, falls in love and the usually stuff, not much of exiting and those demons that are just ridiculous boring,
Ogre village cool but ogre suppose to have magic power or atleast the should be like 3 times faster stronger than humans, here is nothing,
They didn’t look something fantasy chlotes and all of them looked the same, some could be like three meters high,
They could fight the demon with bare hands or throw some very big rocks at the demons,
The journey to foots, walking, even i was tired of that, couldn’t they use a magical animal to fly instead??,
My score: 1.5 of 5 i survived, there was nothing to watch before the end,
Please use some imagination next movie, and a bit action/violent, most kids today are tought….
Thank you for your comment 🙂
Nope not the best fantasy, more like love life stuff, very empty, no big feeling or be really sad off,
No good action scenes nor epic, the kids was never in danger,
I already forgotten the movie 5 minute’s after i was finish,
No fantasy outfits, effects, no magical beast or persons,
13 year+ of age this movie??? You mean 7+ year of age or less,
My score: 1.0 of 5, please use some more time on the next movie, and please call the chibli guys, and not netflix next time,
God grief i fell asleep some place’s, im lucky i woke up again….(near death experience)….
