Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 1 Review: With A Broken Heart

The grandfather of isekai has returned this season as Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 1 has just finished airing. Let’s see how the newest season of the adventure begins!

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 1 Overview

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 1 Title

Mushoku Tensei, also known as Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation or Mushoku Tensei Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu in original Japanese, is an adventure, drama and fantasy anime based on a light novel series written by Rifujin na Magonote and illustrated by Sirotaka. This episode is also known as Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 1 and Mushoku Tensei Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu Season 2 Episode 1.

The latest season of the anime is being directed by Hiroki Hirano, who served as an assistant director of the second part of the show’s first season. However, the studio that produces and adapts the anime remains the same, as that responsibility again falls to Studio Bind, who haven’t really done anything other than Mushoku Tensei.

Rudeus Sara Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 1

The theme of the first episode of the newest season was depression, a topic that the show has had a long history with, and it has dealt with it very well previously. Just like the show, Rudeus, the main character, also has had a very long history of depression. He wouldn’t tell anybody in this life, but the entire reason behind him being a shut-in was crippling depression that wouldn’t let him shake away his insecurities and anxiety to embrace the reality of his situation. It was a sad situation that has only gotten sadder as time has passed.

Right when Rudeus thought he had discovered a purpose in his life- to get Eris back home and to restore Ruijerd’s place in society, everything was taken away from him as Eris chose to be away from him in order to get stronger and Ruijerd, having fulfilled his duties, went on his own path. Once again, Rudeus had nothing. He has already managed to reunite most of his family except his mom, but they are all also away from him, and he doesn’t have any of them by their side. He is once again experiencing the same loneliness he had as a shut-in and resorting to similar coping methods.

Fireball Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 1

We saw him take a leap of faith at the end of the final episode of Season 1, but he is still a shell of his former self as he tries to look for his mother. The newest season introduces a whole new party of characters to lead us into. Through their eyes, we saw just how much pain Rudy was in and how much he didn’t care about his well-being. The show handled this very gracefully and with much respect for those who have been through this, which was nice to see.

There isn’t much more to say about this episode, as this was mostly just about the journey that Rudy went on with this new group and reached a conclusion that I am not going to spoil. All of the members of this new party had decent personalities, and mostly, they were just what Rudy needed at that moment to get his head back into the game. There is still a lot of work to do, and he is only getting started on the journey that is sure to last several more decades.

The production quality of the show has remained virtually unchanged from the previous season, which is a good thing as I really appreciated the classic look of the season and how smooth the animation could be when it needed to be. There are plenty of sprawling shots of nature and landscapes that are very pleasing to the eyes in every episode, and Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 1 was no different. We didn’t get to hear the new opening, but there’s plenty of time left for that.

Verdict

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 1 was a great but ultimately standard opening episode for the season. It handled the matter of Rudeus’s depression well, even if that was the only thing it did.
