Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born Episode 2 Review: Battle for the Spotlight

The first episode of Jeong-Nyeon: The Star is Born introduces Jeongnyeon, a young girl with a passion for pansori, despite her mother’s strict ban on singing. Set in post-war Korea, Jeongnyeon and her sister work in the market selling fish and clams to make a living. When Jeongnyeon’s bold singing catches the attention of famous actress Moon Ok-kyeong, she’s offered theatre tickets and a potential path to her dreams. Captivated by the theatre’s magic, Jeongnyeon decides to pursue acting, but her mother tries to prevent her. With the help of her supportive sister, Jeongnyeon escapes and joins Ok-kyeong on her journey to Seoul, determined to audition and become a theatre star.

Directed by Jung Ji-in, this series offers a glimpse into the post-war theatre world, capturing the ambition, rivalry, and personal struggles of its characters.

The second episode of Jeong-Nyeon: The Star is Born opens with three auditionees—Cho-rok, Bok-sil, and A-young—introducing themselves to Jeongnyeon, mistaking her for someone wealthy and well-connected to the famed actress Moon Ok-kyeong. When they discover that Jeongnyeon is just a humble fishmonger, they insult her, but Jeongnyeon, unfazed, boldly challenges them, warning they may regret underestimating her. However, during the audition, Jeongnyeon struggles in the dance round due to a sprained shoulder. In the acting round, she doesn’t perform a scene but instead bursts into tears, remembering her late father who passed away during the war while they were migrating.

This genuine display of emotion surprises the judges, particularly director Kang So-bok, who then moves on to the singing round. After Cho-rok and Bok-sil complete their performances, Jeongnyeon steps up and sings with all her heart, stunning the audience. The powerful rendition stirs memories in So-bok, reminding her of her own childhood and a long-lost friend, which reveals that the opening scene from Episode 1 was a flashback from So-bok’s past. Overcome with emotion, So-bok remains silent, unable to comment. After the performances, Se-young, another senior figure, announces the selected trainees: Cho-rok, Bok-sil, and A-young, the very girls who had earlier insulted Jeongnyeon. However, she then reveals a special exception for the year: Jeongnyeon has been selected as an understudy.

Jeongnyeon can hardly believe her luck and excitement fills her as she processes the news. Later, So-bok calls her in privately to explain why she chose her as an understudy rather than a full trainee. She expresses concern that others might think Jeongnyeon was selected due to her connection with Ok-kyeong rather than her own talent, but she encourages Jeongnyeon to prove them wrong. During the conversation, So-bok also asks for the name of Jeongnyeon’s mother, and Jeongnyeon replies, “Yong-Rye.” So-bok appears disappointed, secretly hoping Jeongnyeon might be connected to her childhood friend.

Jeongnyeon excitedly shares the news of her selection with Ok-kyeong, who congratulates her and encourages her to aim higher and become a true rival. That evening, Jeongnyeon heads to her dormitory, where her fellow trainees hint that she will soon meet her mysterious roommate. As Jeongnyeon falls asleep, a figure quietly enters the room, gripping a script tightly as they observe her. The next day, Jeongnyeon befriends a trainee named Joo-ran, who shows her around the theater. While wandering alone, Jeongnyeon overhears someone singing beautifully and is drawn to a girl with exceptional vocals. For the first time, Jeongnyeon feels inferior in her singing ability, mesmerized by the girl’s talent.

When the trainees gather for practice, So-bok calls on Jeongnyeon to sing for the group. As she prepares, So-bok invites the mysterious girl from earlier—Heo Yeong-seo, Jeongnyeon’s newfound rival—to join her in a head-to-head performance. The two girls stun everyone with their incredible singing, but when Jeongnyeon extends her hand for a handshake, Yeong-seo haughtily refuses, making it clear that she sees Jeongnyeon as competition. That night, Jeongnyeon learns that Yeong-seo is actually her roommate, but the cold-shouldered girl barely acknowledges her presence.

The following morning, Jeongnyeon is reprimanded by So-bok for not wearing her uniform. Bok-sil, one of the bullies, claims she left the uniform outside Jeongnyeon’s room, but when Jeongnyeon finds it, she realizes it was part of a prank. Angry, she confronts Bok-sil and her friends, who make a bet with her: if she can get her hands on the main audition script, they will apologize. Determined, Jeongnyeon approaches Se-young for the script, but instead, she is handed the trainee play script. Se-young proposes a deal: if Jeongnyeon can secure a role in the upcoming trainee play set to air in 10 days, she will get what she truly wants.

With the odds stacked against her, Jeongnyeon pushes forward. She demands a role in the play from Yeong-seo, who assigns her the role of Bangju, a character known for being embarrassing. It’s clear Yeong-seo gave her this role with the hope that Jeongnyeon would withdraw from the play in humiliation. However, Jeongnyeon is determined to make the most of the role and vows to ace it.

Later, Jeongnyeon meets with Ok-kyeong, accompanied by Joo-ran, and asks for guidance on playing the role of Bangju. To Jeongnyeon’s surprise, Ok-kyeong hands her the main audition script and advises her to focus on that instead, calling the trainee roles “silly” in comparison. Ok-kyeong reiterates her belief in Jeongnyeon’s potential and encourages her to aspire not only to be a successor but a rival capable of surpassing her.

The second episode of Jeong-Nyeon: The Star is Born continues to build on Jeongnyeon’s journey toward stardom, delivering both emotional depth and tense rivalries. The episode does a fantastic job highlighting the class divide and the harsh realities Jeongnyeon faces as she navigates the competitive world of theater. Her interactions with the other auditionees, especially the initial bullying by Cho-rok, Bok-sil, and A-young, add layers of conflict that feel genuine and relatable. Yet, Jeongnyeon’s resilience in the face of these challenges is inspiring. The episode’s emotional core is elevated when Jeongnyeon’s raw, unfiltered grief during the acting round wins over the judges, providing a poignant moment that contrasts with the more superficial ambitions of her competitors.

The introduction of Yeong-seo as Jeongnyeon’s vocal rival adds another layer of drama, setting the stage for a fierce competition between the two. The episode balances personal growth and external conflicts well, as Jeongnyeon begins to confront her limitations while still holding on to her dreams. The dynamic between her and Ok-kyeong also evolves, with Ok-kyeong pushing Jeongnyeon to think beyond the smaller roles and focus on the bigger picture. It’s also evident that Jeongnyeon’s mother is Geongseon, the friend of So-bok who changed her name and lived a different life. Something must have happened in her life which made her not to make her daughter never sing.

This episode leaves viewers eager to see how Jeongnyeon will handle the pressures of her new world while staying true to her passion for pansori and theater.
