Chief Detective 1958 Episode 9 Recap

Young-han and his team continue to bring justice to the city while catching swindlers, thieves, and criminals of all sorts for the people. After another such day, they return to the station to find Nan-sil waiting for them with a friend who has something to report. The young girl tells them about the disappearance of women from the factory she works at and the report she made regarding the same.

Young-han asks about the investigation and Nan-sil tells him that Unit 2 was in charge of it and had closed the case soon after. They turn to question Unit 2’s Hwang Soo-man and find out that he didn’t really conduct any serious investigation and carelessly closed the case. He tells them that there are more serious cases to investigate and they can take over this case if they think it is important.

Young-han snatches the case file from him and warns him that if things turn out serious in this case, then he will make sure to punch him. The rest of the team follows along with him and begins their investigation. The girl informs them that about 5 girls have gone missing from the factory, which happens after the monthly meeting their factory holds. The team notes this down and heads to investigate the factory.

There, the team questions the manager during which Young-han’s eyes fall on a female worker who is trying to catch his attention and he approaches her secretly. He asks her about her wounds and finds out that the factory owner had beaten her. He then asks about the missing girls and the woman tells him about how she heard the owner point towards girls during the monthly meeting as if selecting them for something.

Young-han understands what is happening and rushes into the factory owner’s office to catch him. The man caught is one of the high-ranking officer’s kids- Kwon Hyung-geun, who had previously helped Do-seok in getting rid of Dal-sik in exchange for his help in covering their crime. Thus, right after Young-han brings him to the station, Do-seok rushes in, punches him, and takes Kwon Hyung-geun away with him.

However, Young-han makes sure to warn Hyung-geun that the case hasn’t been closed yet and he will make sure that justice is served. Soon, the team gets news about a corpse being found near a cliff with the factory’s uniform on it and they rush to find that it was the woman who was reported missing. Young-han is saddened that he wasn’t able to find the girl alive but carries on his investigation to bring her justice.

The team suggest using this as evidence against Hyung-geun, but Young-han stops them and tells them that they first need to collect proper evidence. They then see her face and find a geisha-like makeup which only makes them realise how badly she must have been tortured before death.

A forensic team soon arrives at the scene and it is revealed that the woman was sexually and physically abused, was injected with opium, hit with a hard object on her head, and was dead due to being beaten up before she was thrown down the cliff. They also found bits of flesh in her fingernails which shows that she tried to fight back and left behind marks on her perpetrator.

The team informs Chief Yu about the same and he heads to get the drugs tested while informing the others about the people they are going up against. He tells them about the Tennis Boys Club that Hyung-geun is part of and how this is filled with boys of influential families. He tells them where these men can be found and the team heads out to meet their new targets.

There, they see the scratch mark they expected to see on Hyung-geun on another man- No Yoon-hak, and come to a conclusion that there is more than one perpetrator. Later, Chief Yu tells them how he was unable to get through his investigation as hearing the names involved made the investigators turn their heads away.

Young-han knows that they need solid evidence to get these men into prison and heads to Mokryeongak (the pub where influential people and corrupt officials usually meet). The owner welcomes them inside and Young-han heads straight to the point by asking her about Hyung-geun and his friends, and their schedule on the day of the murder.

However, the owner is not ready to reveal the truth and feigns innocence about the matter. Young-han expected this outcome but tries to influence her by reminding her about her conscience after which he heads back with Sang-sun. However, they meet one of the employees there whom they had helped earlier and have a brief exchange which is seen by the owner.

After the two leave, the owner asks the woman about the officers and finds out that they can be trusted. Meanwhile, the deceased’s mother arrives at the police station in hopes of reuniting with her daughter but is stunned by the news of her death. Seeing the woman cry for her daughter, Young-han assures her that he will make sure that the perpetrators are given the punishment they deserve.

The next day, the men at the Tennis Boys Club show their influence by bringing national-level players to their game and treating them badly. Later, Yoon-hak shows his displeasure towards their current situation with the police and blames Jung Hee-sun for causing these problems. As Hee-sung is the main perpetrator in the factory worker’s case, he bears the brunt of the three other men and apologises to them.

He then hands over a bottle of expensive liquor before rejecting their invitation to join them for drinks. Elsewhere, the owner of Mokryeongak arrives at Hye-ju’s bookstore and asks for Young-han who soon arrives with his team. She then gives her testimony to them and information related to the four men.

She tells them that while they are all bad, Jung Hee-sung is the worst of them all as he not only indulges in opium but also tortures her employees whenever they come. She shows them a picture of their doings and they see the makeup on the girl’s face which is similar to the deceased. They ask her about it and the owner tells them that Hee-sung is the one who does this and it is a Japanese makeup which shows obedience and loyalty towards one’s husband.

Young-han warns her that she may be in trouble but she assures him that she will find a way to keep herself and Mokryeongak safe. The team then heads out to catch the men, unaware that Hee-sung has gotten to the other three before them. The three get involved in a car crash and Young-han arrives there when on his way to capture them.

While two men are dead on spot, they find Nam Jung-gil still alive and rush him to the hospital and Young-han understands the severity of the case. Meanwhile, Ho-jeong finds a case filled with opium rolls inside the overturned car. They later discuss the case with Chief Yu and Young-han brings out his suspicion about Hee-sung being the one who designed this accident to keep himself safe.

Seeing that this might actually be true, he then rushes to the hospital with the team where he meets Hee-sung inside the ward where Jung-gil is kept. He then instigates Hee-sung and shows him the opium box which gets a reaction out of Hee-sung, thus, confirming their suspicions.

This angers hee-sung and meets Do-seok to keep Young-han in control. However, Do-seok knows the card he holds and puts Hee-sung in his place before going about clearing up the mess caused by the latter. He then holds a meeting with the press and tells them that there was no opium found on the scene, instead it was salt. He also fabricates lies about the incident and keeps Hee-sung’s image clean.

This lie infuriates the Unit 1 team as they now place Do-seok as one of Hee-sung’s accomplices and a suspect. The team then heads out to keep an eye on Yoon-hak with the help of detective Nam Sung-hoon who is dressed as a doctor in the hospital. Jung-gil soon wakes up and the Sung-hoon informs Young-han about the same, but when they are to head inside they spot Hee-sung and decide to wait outside until Yoon-hak’s mother comes out.

Hee-sung sends Jung-gil’s mother back home while Young-han and his team get ready to reach Jung-gil. Sang-sun and Ho-jeong divert the attention of the guards at the room’s door while Young-han tries to enter the room through the window. With Kyeong-hwan’s help, he begins to descend from the rooftop to reach the room.

However, Hee-sung has already put his plan into action and is trying to choke Jung-gil to death while Young-han is also in trouble when the makeshift rope he is using breaks and he slowly falls from the height.
