There are going to be consequences for this Devil Hunting romp in the middle of this city for Power and Denji in Chainsaw Man Episode 4. Let’s see how mad Makima got in this review!
Chainsaw Man Episode 4 Overview

Chainsaw Man is an action, adventure and supernatural anime put on our screen by Studio MAPPA, a hugely popular studio behind some of the other extremely popular shonen properties right now, such as Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen. The series is based on a manga of the same name written by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Click here to read the review of the previous episode!

Chainsaw Man Episode 4 Review- It Is Not Over Yet

I have a question for you before starting this review- is there an anime that the world seems to like but you don’t care about? One that you think might be overrated or doesn’t deserve the attention that it gets? If so, do you tend to judge people when they express their own opinions on the anime they think are this way or do you understand that some people just aren’t going to like some anime and leave it at that? Please let me know in the comments because I would like to know if people are open enough on the internet to admit their biases.

The reason I ask this is that, by episode 3, I was almost ready to make Chainsaw Man an anime like that for me. I did not like that episode very much and didn’t feel like a series full of episodes exactly like that deserved the kind of attention it was getting. However, after the latest episode, I would like to admit that I was wrong for thinking that way because I judged the show too fast and harsher than I would want anyone to judge one of my favourite shows. I thoroughly enjoyed Chainsaw Man Episode 4, and it was one of my favourite things to air this season.

While I didn’t love how we got here, everything that happened in this episode made me appreciate the writing and character work in this show. I enjoyed how we started with some of Power’s happy moments with Meowy in this episode, followed by them getting saved by Denji in the goriest way possible. I liked how she didn’t faze even after being saved and was willing to let herself die to save her cat, and how she wasn’t a shallow character as she was in danger of becoming if something like this wasn’t done.

While Denji could still use a lot more edge to his character and a motivation that is a little beyond “touching breasts”, his defence of his dream in front of a Devil who vastly overpowered him was fantastic. The dialogue was great in this episode, whether it be the funny quips or the somewhat serious battle calls. Aki and Denji had some great chemistry in Chainsaw Man Episode 4, and I fully believe that they’re going to be a great duo to watch in the future. The proper addition of Power into the mix was also lovely, and I love the dynamic between the three.

Now- the elephant in the room. The title of this review is apt in multiple ways, as this episode also looked like a dream. The animation of the battle was phenomenal and one of the smoothest things you will see this entire year. Not only that, but the slower and more meaningful sections, such as Aki having a cup of coffee after waking up, were animated to look more beautiful than the better episodes of most other shows. This is the kind of show that makes you worried about the animators’ sleep schedule while drawing it.
Verdict
Chainsaw Man Episode 4 was practically flawless. There was some great writing, fantastic character work, and somehow even better animation. This show is the real deal, folks.
