Broker: All About Song Kang-ho’s South Korean Heartwarming Story of Misfits

Broker (브로커) is a South-Korean film written and directed by Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. The plot of the story centres around the concept of baby boxes. It is the process which allows unwanted infants to be dropped off anonymously by their biological parents. The boxes are then collected by others who wish to care for newborn babies.

Miyuki Fukuma, Yoon Hye Joon, Eugene Lee, Miky Lee, Dae-chan Song, and Kang Ho-sung produces the movie. Hong Kyung-pyo is the cinematographer, and Jung Jae-il gives the music. The movie has a total runtime of approximately 129 minutes.

Broker Cast

Cannes Best Actor winner Song Kang-ho as Sang-hyeon takes up the lead role. Singer and songwriter Lee Ji-eun, also known as IU as So-young, Bae Doona as Soo-jin, Dong-won Gang as Dong-soo and Lee Joo-young as Detective Lee. The rest of the supporting and recurring cast includes Kang Gil-woo as Mr Lim, Park Hae-joon, Seung-soo Im as Hae-jin, Sae-byeok Kim as Sae-byuk Kim, Ryu Kyung-Soo as Shin Tae-ho, Dong-hwi Lee, Lee Moo-saeng, Ji-yong Park as Woo-sung, Sae-byeok Song and Kim Sun-young.

Broker Plot/Synopsis

After creating Shoplifters in 2018, Hirokazu Kore-eda returns with another tale of a “chosen family” with Broker film. The story is mainly about two men doing ordinary jobs during the day and engaging in fishy business on the side. They volunteer at a nearby church but have ulterior motives behind it. They occasionally steal baby boxes from the holy house and sell them in the adoption black market.

However, their lives are completely changed when a young mother, So-young, who left her baby at the church, returns. The trio take a road trip together where So-young interviews various potential parents of the baby. Their lives further become complicated when the two detectives, Soo-jin and Lee, catch on with their intricate plans.

The trailer of the movie gives us an overview of how the story about the misfits would evolve. The movie has received various praises from critics worldwide. The unusual story about human life is bound to move the audience and connect with them. The story consists of a dark undertone; nevertheless, the movie’s main theme is about how people form intimate and close relationships in the unlikeliest places. Hope and love are the major elements of the plot.

Broker will have a theatrical release in India on January 20, 2023.
