The Mysterious Benedict Society Season 2 Episode 4 Review: The Gifted Orphans Get Closer to Mr Benedict

The Mysterious Benedict Society Season 2 Episode 4 finds the gifted orphans inching closer to their mentors (Tony Hale and Kristen Schaal) while being continuously attacked by Curtain’s henchmen. The episode follows a similar solution and flee trajectory and is filled with many humourous moments. The latest instalment of the adventure drama is directed by Kabir Akhtar.

The cast of the episode includes the series regulars, MaameYaa Boafo as Rhonda, Ryan Hurst as Milligan, Mystic Inscho as Reynie Muldoon, Seth Carr as Sticky, Emmy DeOliveira as Kate Wetherall, and Marta Kessler as Constance Contraire, Tony Hale as Dr Curtain/Mr Benedict and Kristen Schaal as Number Two. Moreover, the episode is titled as Free of Pointless Command and has a runtime of thirty-four minutes.

The episode starts with a near escape and then leads to a long and rude taxi ride, for reaching the station. The prodigies are all prepared for the upcoming danger (Dr Curtain’s Henchmen) but lack enough quids to pay back for the cab fare. The rude driver decides to call the police and attempts to get the orphans arrested, thereby stopping their adventure in mid-action.

Constance diffuses the situation by trading her birthday locket (given by Mr Benedict), which not only saves the team but also Kate’s precious bucket. Meanwhile, Rhonda and Milligan decide to leave Ms Perumal behind and continue their rescue mission without the unresourceful educator. Ms Perumal wins back the duo by appearing on an orange scooter, with a sidecar (that she states to be found inside a farm and had no need to be hot-wired). All in all, the teachers unite once again and try their level best to catch up with the kids.

Even though Number two finds an escape, she notices that Mr Benedict is already affected by Curtain’s new formula. And will need time to become normal once again. Furthermore, the kids also realize that they’ll need the locket back to complete the second clue, and reach Mr Benedict.

The episode follows a similar trajectory of solving clues and escaping the bad guys. And also kind of repeats the event, with a slight moderation in humour and wit. For instance, the henchman asking for a cab receipt is absurdly funny.

The episode only pushes the story forward and offers minimum revelations. The kids might have escaped the first henchman party, but the polo players are back to increase their troubles. Morever, the real meaning of Constance’s past is still left to be covered.

The youngest member of the mysterious society has shown more emotions than we can handle, and it’s definitely a sign of a big setup. Similarly, Ms Perumal has become the redeemer and found her place in the rescue group. Which means she might have a big role to play in the upcoming episodes.

The episode is high on deadpan humour and adventure but ends without much progress. However, the series is not even halfway through and we have plenty of time to rescue Mr Bendecit, from his malicious twin brother. Plus, Milligan needs to find new boots for sure.
