The Empress Season 2: Netflix Confirms the Next Outing to the Viennese Court

It’s good news for the fans of the German series who’d been waiting for The Empress Season 2 as Netflix has given the second installment a green flag. This announcement comes after the many disappointing cancelations of several series on the platform that weren’t granted another chance despite their fans desperately waiting on the news of their renewal.

The first season of the series starring Devrim Lingnau, Philip Froissant, Melika Foroutan, Johannes Nusbaum, and more premiered on the streaming platform on September 29, 2022, with 6 episodes. Telling the true story of a historical empire’s past led by the Austrian Empress Elisabeth in her early days, the series threaded the events that led her to step into the Viennese Court despite the many vehement oppositions directed at her.

Right after the premiere itself, the series climbed high on the top 10 trending shows on Netflix, and the series owes its vote of thanks for the same to its own cast that brilliantly brought these historical public figures to life with ease. Devrim Lingnau took immediate charge with her portrayal as the titular protagonist and instantly made us fall in love with her. The overall presentation of the show makes a crucial contribution to setting the tone for the aristocratic visage of the empire.

Season 1 was primarily focused on Elisabeth’s marriage with Froissant’s Emperor Franz Joseph I, which had its own share of ups and downs owing to the schemes being plotted against them by Elisabeth’s in-laws. While Princess Sophie of Bavaria played by Melika Foroutan, Elisabeth’s mother-in-law, mutually shared her ambitious vigor with her daughter-in-law’s disposition, the two never saw eye to eye. Princess Sophie even deviously constructed a plan to oust the new Empress from the palace.

On the other hand, Archduke Maximilian played by Johannes Nussbaum shared his own disregard for the family ever since his brother was crowned the Emperor. Over the season, he’s shared a complex relationship with him while wanting to rise as a notable figure in the eyes of his mother, thus, wanting to usurp the throne, simultaneously, harboring some feelings for Elisabeth.

Each character made the storyline as rich as possible, channeling their respective ideas of court politics. Now, that the series will be back soon for the next season, it’s bound to pick up from where we left off with Elisabeth finding out that she’s finally pregnant and accepting her role as the Empress of the people, someone who won’t easily be swayed by grand conspiracies at work against her.
