With Gabriel somewhat behind us for now, The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 5 focuses on the slice-of-life elements of the show. Let’s see if it was able to get the tone right in this review!
The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 5 Overview

Season 2 of The Devil Is A Part-Timer has been a long time coming ever since the series was first released in 2013 and impressed a lot of viewers with its character development and storytelling. The series is adapted from a Light Novel written by Satoshi Wagahara and illustrated by 029. It is also known in original Japanese as Hataraku Maou-sama Season 2 (stylised as Hataraku Maou-sama!!)
Studio 3Hz is producing this season, the team behind Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online and Princess Principal. It is being directed by Daisuke Tsukushi, who has been part of the productions of shows like Higurashi and My Hero Academia. This episode is also referred to as Hataraku Maou-sama Season 2 Episode 5 (or Hataraku Maou sama Season 2 Episode 5). Click here to read the review of the previous episode in the series!

The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 5 Review- A Nice Coincidence

Hell of a coincidence we’ve got here, one that can only happen if someone is either bang out of ideas or there is a higher power in play that is as of yet invisible but will play a part in the story later. What else could explain Maou (temporarily) losing both his job and his place of residence at the same time? Not just that, but getting a (temporary) job offer in The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 5 that takes care of both of those problems in one fell swoop and pays better than his original job sounds too good to be true and it just might be.

This was a strange turn of events, to say the least. It would have been impossible to write this review without that little bit of context in mind, so I went ahead and changed the spoiler warning for this one. The episode focuses on how the cast reacts to this news and the change of scenery that we are about to get for the show. No matter the means the show used to get there, the intentions behind these decisions were quite noble, as this freshened up the plot a lot and made it less predictable than it once was, alongside introducing a few new characters into the mix.

The change of scenery took our characters to countryside Japan, somewhere with a lot of sunlight, sandy beaches, shores large and vibrant enough to surf on, and everything else that’s picturesque about the Japanese countryside. Doing so allowed the animators to flex their colouring skills, as The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 5 looked more vibrant than ever before. It looked very pretty, and the beach is a quintessential slice-of-life anime location, and you can’t go wrong with focusing on that for a while, especially if the stakes aren’t currently very high in the show.

It is time for the weekly “dumping on Lucifer” part of the review, as even when facing something as dire as starvation, he was not happy about helping out with anything that would ease the weight off of Ashia’s and Maou’s shoulders. What is the point of having a leech like him living with all these great characters of the show, who all possess hearts of gold except for him? Why is it so hard for him to do a singular useful thing after causing so many problems in the first place? Why is he featured so much but not Ashia, who has been criminally underused for how good of a character he is?

Everything the show is doing with Chiho right now is fantastic. Her inner turmoil is very realistic for a lovestruck 16-year-old to have. Maou’s interactions with her are always very sweet, and in an ideal world, she would be the one who would get to spend the rest of her life (or however much of it she wants) with Maou and not somebody who is off to kill him like Emilia. The more that we see of Chiho, the more we know that there could be a lot more to her if the writers wanted to be, so let’s end this one with the hopes that she gets to shine a little more in the show.
Verdict
The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 5 was a refreshing change of pace if a little confusing. The show is in a state where it can go in any direction from this point, so the next episodes will be crucial for it.
