What Are the Medusa Devices and Why Did the Medusas Petrify Humanity?

The Medusa devices, which were later referred to as Why-man, were nothing but alien life forms. They are parasitic in nature, and they go from one planet to another in search of hosts. They came to Earth, hoping they would be able to depend on humanity. So their plan was to show humans what their power can do to develop a relationship built on co-dependency. However, they expected too much from this race. Their petrification had an opposite effect, and the whole civilisation collapsed.

What was the next step for the alien race?

The alien race did not retaliate, nor did they do anything to humans. They just concluded that it would be better for them to leave Earth and search for another intelligent race rather than stick around. Only one device stayed behind because they believed in Senku’s vision.

What happens in the future?

The future is bright for every main character, and we see what happens to most of them. Gen becomes a diplomat, Tsukasa still fights crimes, Ryusui creates a company under his name, and he still has an intense want for everything. Other than that, the science team was also working on a massive project. The other characters largely continue doing the same things they’ve always done.

Who ends up with whom?

Even though there was a high hope that maybe Senku might end up with someone, preferably Kohaku, that did not happen for obvious reasons. Senku was never interested in a relationship, and Kuhaku herself was not either. Thus, the most obvious couple, Taiju and Yuzuriha, get married in this episode. Not only that, but we also see Chrome proposing to Ruri, who happily says yes.

Does Senku Actually Build a Time Machine?

Senku finally disclosed what project he was working on. Apparently, he was planning to create a time machine to help them stop the attack from happening in the very first place. Though the device is not ready yet, Xeno suggests they could also utilise AI to send information about the attack to their past selves. And pretty much that is where the series ends.

Does The Time Travel Idea Make Sense?

Honestly, the time-travel aspect threw me off a bit. If they actually manage to prevent the attack from ever happening, many of the characters wouldn’t even exist in the first place. On the other hand, if the world they save is separate from the one they currently live in, and changing the past has no effect on their present timeline, then Senku hasn’t really saved the people of his own world. In that case, it’s debatable how meaningful or effective this solution actually is.

What Does the Ending Mean?

The ending signified the core theme of Dr Stone, which is the never-ending curiosity of human beings. We would never stop asking questions, nor would we even stop evolving. Even though the civilisation was hit in the series and everything reverted to the Stone Age, some curious humans and an extraordinarily gifted scientist still managed to kickstart development.

There were many obstacles along the way, but nothing could stop scientific progress. In the end, Dr Stone shows that science and human curiosity will always find a way forward. That said, the ending with everyone working together to build the future was a pretty good conclusion.
