Archangel Gabriel has given our heroes one night to prepare for their confrontation with him, making The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 4 a stressful outing for a show as laid back as this one. Let’s see how our heroes dealt with him in this review!

The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 4 Review: A Spirited Defense

This was one of the best episodes of the entire series, not just this season. The field was set after archangel Gabriel gave Maou and Emi one day to either hand Alas Ramus over or face the consequences, which would be the wrath of the protector. After being told about his strength and how Emi and Maou couldn’t defeat him when Maou was in his most powerful form, his puny human one didn’t stand a chance, and it became a huge concern even to take that battle, let alone win it. However, you best believe that Maou and Emi went for it.

What happened next was extraordinarily sweet and a treat to watch, as Maou, Emi, Ashia, Chiho, and everyone else settled in for one long night before they had to face a literal angel to protect someone they had come to love very much over the admittedly small time they had spent with her. They were going to save her, or they were going to die trying, which is a bit much for a normally tame show but still entirely within the realm of possibility considering the death fake-out we saw in Season 1. They went into the night thinking it could have been their last, and it showed.

The conversation between Maou and Emi, done through an extremely creative medium of a nighttime story for Alas Ramus, is one of the most inspired things the show has ever done. The show handled Emilia’s biggest question with an inordinate amount of grace. It is still a mystery why Maou did the things he did, why he went after Ente Isla, and what his motivations were behind settling in the human world and regret everything he did, but at least we know now that there is regret there. Not just that, but Maou seems keenly aware of how terrible the things he did were and wants to atone for them.

As the night and the good times came to an end, it was time to get serious and bargain with Gabriel about sparing Emi’s blade and Alas Ramus. We got to see the repenting side of Maou once again, leading to help coming from an entirely unexpected source, which was hilarious and made logical sense with the kind of story the show was trying to tell from the start. There was also a lot of information dumping as it was necessary to draw the connections between Maou, Emilia, Gabriel, and Alas Ramus, but it wasn’t so bad as to stall the show’s momentum.

The end to The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 4 was also a good one, as it set up this particular arc for a great conclusion while utilising previously mentioned nuggets of knowledge that the show dropped a while ago. Even Lucifer wasn’t completely useless this time, as he did one (1) single thing that wasn’t leeching off someone else or creating problems. That alone makes this the best-written episode, and every other good thing about it comes after this one. This arc is shaping up to be ridiculously emotional and ambitious, and we can only hope that the conclusion is as good as the middle.
Verdict
The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 4 was a phenomenal outing. It was just the right amount of emotional, funny, and logical to elevate this entire season to a level that might be above the original.
