Wonder Woman (2022): A Poignant Tale of Six Pregnant Women

Pregnancy is an experience that is often termed the most beautiful one that a woman can go through. Living in this era, the pain is also equally highlighted as is the trauma that comes with the experience along with bodily changes and mood swings. Yet Anjali Menon’s Wonder Woman feels like a slice-of-life film that is extraordinary and will make you teary-eyed almost at all its crevices as it flows like a sparkling river.

Wonder Women introduces us to Nandita who runs a pre-natal class called Sumana, which is essentially a place for pregnant women to learn about the experience of being pregnant, and get their questions and fears cleared while also educating themselves on being new mothers. We meet six very different women- Jaya, Gracy, Veni, Mini, Nora and Saya who land up in Sumana under Nandita’s care.

At Sumana, they not only learn but, make new friends, enjoy different experiences and emotions and find answers to their deep-rooted problems. The story unfolds in a way where we get to see the women collectively but, also beyond the pre-natal classes- at their homes, on the streets, and with their family members and partners.

Wonder Women explores various aspects of womanhood, pregnancy and childbirth. The diversity in the six different women ranges from cultural to their socio-economic backgrounds and yet, the story’s diversity is so welcoming as the characters never let you feel anything but, love and admiration for them. From a single mother to a woman with a treatment pregnancy, the film tries to touch each and every aspect concerning its core topic without overwhelming itself in the process. It takes its moments and pauses and looks away for just enough time for us to reflect on what or how the characters are feeling.

Anjali Menon, like always, has so beautifully crafted her characters that it is impossible to not be empathetic and put yourself in each one’s shoes. The actors have taken that beauty and reciprocated it to us in their own artistic ways where they are able to be an individual and never overshadow the other. Nadiya Moidu, Nithya Menen, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Padmapriya, Sayanora Phillip, Archana Padmini And Amruta Subhash who are the heart of the movie and our titular Wonder Women are charismatic and exceptional in serving us exactly what was expected from the movie and, a little more.
