The makers of the hit Netflix series Dark, have returned with yet another mystery thriller German show 1899, which diminishes the line between reality and stimulation. The show revolves around a steamship travelling to America, with several passengers on board, that makes a nightmarish contact with another stuck ship named Prometheus. The show is helmed by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar and stars Emily Beecham (The Pursuit of Love) in a prominent role.
The cast of the series includes Andreas Pietschmann as the Ship captain Eyk, Aneurin Barnard as Daniel Solace, Miguel Bernardeau as Ángel, José Pimentão as the fake priest Ramiro, Isabella Wei as Ling Yi, Yann Gael as Jerome, Mathilde Ollivier as Clémence, and Maciej Musiał as Olek. Moreover, the episodes are written by Emma Cole, Coline Abert, and Joshua Long and edited by Denis Bachter. While Nikolaus Summerer serves as the cinematographer.
-1899 Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-
The series starts on a 19th Century steamship Kerberos (bound to travel from Europe to America) steered by captain Eyk (played by Andreas Pietschmann). At first in the journey, we are introduced to passengers from different ethnicity and backgrounds, with certain things in common. This includes a primary painful past, and a secondary dream, to start a new life in New York City.
One of the vital passengers in the journey includes Maura Franklin (Emily Beecham), who boards the ship after receiving a secret letter from her lost brother. Muara believes that her brother was present on the ship named Prometheus, which went missing in the middle of the sea, nearly four months ago. Furthermore, she also thinks that her sociopathic father is behind all this mess and is somehow connected to the disappearance of the steamship.
Eventually, some horrifying set of events starts to take place in this brilliant suspense thriller, when captain Eyk locates the lost ship, and onboards a mysterious kid, who was the only survivor of the Prometheus. What happens next, will surely leave you scratching your head for multiple answers.
There has to be something incredible about a show, that is successful in engrossing you for eight episodes of complete mind-bending revelations. In fact, to be very honest, I had little to no idea about the exact nature of the show until episode six. And still, I was absolutely curious to know what happens next.

I also might have given some credit to Dark (whose reputation alone could have made me sit through an entire twenty-four-hour documentary), but 1899 has all the unique elements of a pitch-perfect ominous drama, which makes it an incredible standalone feat.
Each episode of the show has a setup, where a character wakes from a horrific dream, and tries to figure out what in the seven hells, is actually going on. There is a high chance that you might relate to the perplexed state of the passengers, and still enjoy every minute of this electrifying stimulating mystery drama.
The performance of each cast member (Beecham in particular), will wrap you inside the much more complex world of the show. And also create an environment of fear, confusion and utmost intrigue. Furthermore, the unpredictable end result will definitely reward you for your patience.
1899 Final Thoughts

Frankly, there is no reason why you should miss out on the show, which is going to become a cult of its own. Do yourself a favour this weekend, and binge-watch the eight-episode series. P.S. I cannot guarantee that you’ll understand everything, but I assure you that it’s going to be an out-of-the-world experience.
