Where did Qifrey go in the 2nd episode?

Qifrey actually goes to a place where witches from all over come. Here, he also meets with Alaira, a witch, with whom he seems to have a cordial relationship. They talk about Qifrey’s new student and even mention forbidden magic in passing.

It is from this conversation that we learn just how difficult and dangerous it will be for Coco to give the exam this time of the year. Apparently, the Dadah range, where the exams get held, remains at its highest elevation at this time. This is why it is not at all feasible for Coco to give the exam, at least for now, officially.

Will Coco not give the exam?

Despite the dangers surrounding this exam, Agott becomes adamant that Coco must give the exam to prove her worth right away. This is also why she opens the portal to Dadah highlands and sends Coco there, even though she is completely unprepared.

What are the basics of the exam?

To pass, one must reach the peak of the Dadah range without anyone’s help. There is a special herb called diadem, which they must bring back.

How does Coco fare in the beginning?

Coco is an absolute mess right from the moment she enters the field to take the examination. She is very clumsy and too inexperienced to start the exam on her own. But things become more challenging when she finds out exactly where the ground is. It is a floating area, and to reach that place, she needs the magical shoes that she got from Agott.

What’s the strongest point of Coco?

Though Coco is experienced, and she knows very well that she lacks basic ideas about magic, she is not someone who accepts defeat easily. It becomes very hard for Coco to fly with the help of magic, and she struggles a lot. There are even instances where she loses her balance and falls down multiple times.

Not just that, but her magic shoes lose the ability to fly in the end, and she also wastes all her ink that would have helped her use magic in the 1st place. However, even with all these setbacks, she persisted and did not give up even once.

Why did Abbott want Coco to give the exam?

It finally becomes clear that Abbott did not like Coco or her presence in their atelier. She knew about the dangers of Dadh, but she still sent Coco there because she did not want an outsider to join her. She thought Coco would soon give up and come back, eventually leaving the atelier after realising her incompetence.

Did Coco actually fail?

No, she did not, and she won most unexpectedly ever.

What is the strongest point of this episode?

Even though there were many other strong points, like the emotional segment where we get to witness the parental bond that Coco shared with her mother, the animation needs a special mention. The sequence of Coco flying with her own magic was just magical. It can remind the audience of the Ghibli movies, and for rightful reasons, that entire scene becomes iconic.
