What If Episode 5 Recap: Plot Summary

The Watcher brings us to a universe where the saviours are the destroyers. Similar to Avengers: Infinity War, the What If Zombies episode begins with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) being transported to Earth to tell Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Wong about Thanos (2018). Unfortunately, he gets no help as they are all mutated into zombies.

The only ones who managed to save themselves are Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Hudson Thames), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Happy (Jon Favreau), Kurt (David Dastmalchian), Hope (Evangeline Lilly) and Bruce Banner. Thanks to all the movies Peter watches, just like Infinity War, his cinematic brain help the remaining Avengers fight the zombies and stay safe for some time.

What If Episode 5 Review: Discussion

The episode held my attention from beginning to end. So far, my favourite episode has been What If Episode 4 with Strange Supreme, and now zombies have joined the list. The plot is devastating, the graphics are brutal, and the cliffhanger ending leaves you wanting more. I’m hoping for answers in the upcoming episodes or the upcoming season (if there is one). Marvel has proven time and time again that when they decide to go dark and gory, they will give us only the finest.

Tom Holland might not be the Spidey in today’s episode, but Hudson Thames does a wonderful job and makes you fond of him. It’s good to see Sharon, Okoye and Hope in action after so long. Bucky is intense as we know him and it’s good to see Ant-Man movies’ Kurt (David Dastmalchian) in a prominent role. Peter and Kurt add some comedic relief to the distressing story. The series is bringing together superheroes we never thought would make for such a good team.

I am refraining from giving any major spoilers in my review today as I want you to watch the episode and appreciate its brilliant storytelling, performances and exceptional animation. Yet again, MCU has punched us in the gut by showing us some heartbreaking moments. One thing is proven again, apart from multiverse, Phase 4 is more about love and the extent to which these characters can go for it.

Final Thoughts

The zombies have assembled to terrify you. Just don’t wait any longer and watch the episode ASAP!

What If…? Episode 5 is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
