Comedy specials from Netflix have been some of the most interesting storytelling pieces ever, especially when it comes to comedians who belong to marginalised communities. In Wanda Sykes I’m an Entertainer, we see her tell stories while being a part of the current political landscape. It isn’t easy to align with a certain kind of political ideal and still does comedy without making it too overt. Find out how by reading more about the special below.
Who’s Wanda Sykes?
A comedian since the late 90s, she got her start on The Chris Rock Show. Since then, she has made her own career in this industry, even creating her own show on Netflix titled The Upshaws, which focuses on the life of this blended family bouncing back from trauma and finding a way to make it work again. She will now be collaborating with Netflix again to create this special, which will be directed by Linda Mendoza.

Wanda Sykes I’m an Entertainer Plot/Synopsis
In the beginning of the trailer, we see the comedian walk out from the wing to take her place with a voiceover stating everything that has gone wrong this year, including but not limited to a pandemic, an insurrection, the overturning of Roe v Wade and it still isn’t over. She implies that her special will be bringing back the teachings of Jesus because she’ll save their lives. She also mentioned how the insurrection was essentially a Wakanda Forever remake, just with a bunch of zombies.
Staying true to her special’s description, she explains how it feels like Guiliani bit all of them, making them the zombies chasing down all the people who were working inside with a vengeance unknown. She also talks about drag shows which have also been a staple currently in the political climate, lawmakers have been attacking specifically this community, but Sykes explains that she hasn’t been there anymore because they got rid of the booster seats and the high chairs.
Additionally, she goes into her home life, speaking about her kids. She tells the audience about how the kids will ask her if they can breakfast before going to bed so they can sleep for a longer time in the morning. Now that the world has changed, she wants to go low rather than go high, she just wants to have fun. Find out how by streaming the special.
