Unchosen Ending Explained: What Really Happens in Netflix’s Cult Thriller?

Unchosen Ending Explained: The ending of Unchosen closes the story with an emotional resolution for Rosie, although the last scene is a terrifying reminder of how terrible people will do anything to save themselves and how exposed and vulnerable the members of a cult can be. It’s an unsettling ending, one that leaves us feeling heartbroken for most of the unassuming people involved in the cult.

What happens in the final episode?

In the final episode, Rosie convinces Adam that there’s something wrong with Sam and comes clean about her infidelity. Adam is overcome with heartbreak, but realises where he has gone wrong with his marriage when Rosie reminds him of how he a*saulted her. He chooses to help his wife escape with Grace, who had seen Sam hurting Mr Phillips, as a form of apology. However, they are stopped by Sam, who had smelt something off and followed them.

Adam and Sam get into a scuffle. In the end, Rosie fights with Sam and tells him to let her go if he loves her. Sam breaks down, and Rosie escapes with Grace, ending with them getting help from Mrs Phillips, who had already escaped to his son. Meanwhile, Sam blackmails Adam with the incriminating video and uses it to become one of the leaders of the cult a year after these events.

Did Rosie escape the cult?

Rosie escapes the cult after she gets away from Sam, reminding him that he needs to let her go if he has ever loved her. Thankfully, Mrs Phillips is there to help her get back on her feet and hopefully have a happier life with her daughter. The ending reminds us that there is always light at the end of the tunnel, as everything that Rosie has gone through has taken her to this life of freedom with her daughter, where no one can hurt either of them, and they don’t have to be insulted and belittled.

Sam uses his powers on Adam and controls the cult by becoming an elder, clearly manipulating Adam to do his bidding. Adam, who is in the closet and afraid to break free due to his upbringing, is clearly unable to push back in fear of being shunned. As a result, the cult gets controlled by this dangerous man whose default reaction to any conflict is m*rder.

This proves that dismantling institutional control is much more difficult than one could imagine and that it’s due to people’s fear of being judged that these high-control groups suffer tremendously. Sam comes off as a disruptor rather than the saviour as viewers had been made to believe, as he not only exposes the cracks, but also uses them to his own benefit.

What does “Unchosen” mean?

Unchosen is the term that the cult used on those outside of their community – the people excluded from divine purpose. However, throughout the series, Rosie slowly also becomes “unchosen” and reclaims the label as a form of freedom. It doesn’t mean rejected, as it turns into a safety for her and her daughter, as the world accepts them with open arms.

The ending of the show is more about emotional realism rather than any dramatic closure, and leaves us feeling hopeful and hopeless at the same time. What are your thoughts on Unchosen? Let us know in the comments below!
