Black Doves Season 2 Review: 2024’s Black Doves returns with another season of thrill, anticipation and dangerous operations as Helen returns from her seemingly quiet life back into the spy universe with Sam, as her husband gets ready to become the prime minister.
The second season sees a more personal struggle for Helen, as, after Mrs Reed faces a shocking threat from inside the organisation that puts her position at stake, she and Sam reunite once again to see an end to the madness. However, that road leads them directly to the heart of the organisation, where loyalties are tested, and their past mistakes come back to haunt them.

The cast includes Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw, Sarah Lancashire, Andrew Buchan, Neve Campbell, Ella Lily Hyland, Gabrielle Creevy, Babou Ceesay, Sam Riley, and Ambika Mod, and the series is created by Joe Barton.
Black Doves Season 2 Review
A Spy Story Built Around an Unlikely Friendship
Since its first season, Black Doves has done a good job of creating a friendship story in the midst of the breathtaking action sequences and espionage moments, and the second season continues to be rooted in Helen and Sam’s friendship. Keira Knightley’s double life, especially with Wallace running for Prime Minister, is the tension that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats, but the way the two balance one another out is what gives the series its edge.

The first season was able to mix violence, wit and holiday-season atmosphere perfectly, and the second season continues to have a distinctive feel and vibe that will pull viewers to the story. While the ruthless spy aspect of the characters is thrilling, it’s the emotional core underneath that makes us root for them. In season 2, Sam has turned into a lonely drunk from his previous trigger-happy self, and the season uses it to add to the lore of the story that helps set it apart.
More Pressure on Helen’s Double Life
Wallace’s political life and its effects on Helen’s life are the focus points this season, as it pushes her to make choices and live a more dangerous life than ever before. The season pushes Helen into a much tougher spot, as she is pushed into a more public life, making her association with the Black Doves more complicated. With Mrs Reed’s troubles for her to solve, Helen is pushed to the extreme and on a tightrope. It makes the series taut and thrilling, constantly giving the impression that one mistake can completely wreck her life.

The premise also gives Helen the scope to figure out how she can balance family, relationships and espionage. It’s relatable in a way as well, as even though we don’t usually go out to murder, balancing a career and family isn’t for the weak! However, with so much going on, the plot can sometimes feel a bit heavy. The series is mostly able to balance its different elements well and keeps what’s important front and centre. But even then, there are moments when viewers can feel the weight of the sheer number of things taking place in every episode.
New Faces, Familiar Danger
Along with Helen and Sam, Ambika Mod joins the cast as Laila, another agent sent to help Helen in her task. Laila is the muscle, as she calls it, and is completely no-nonsense. Mod fits right into the kooky group and, alongside the two protagonists, adds a quirky charm with her rugged performance.

The performances are great, including the action sequences that feel natural and always moving; the series, much like every other espionage show right now, feels repetitive and obvious. Black Doves has its own charms, which is undeniable, but the plots, betrayals, twists and political intrigue will feel familiar to viewers who are fans of the genre. Of course, the way it’s presented and its storytelling elements have a distinct feel and edge. Thankfully, Black Doves Season 2 has a wit and emotional core to it that adds a lot to the story.
The characters are the series’ biggest win and leave you absolutely enamoured with their journey. Helen, especially, has a lot on her plate, but somehow, it’s Sam whose melancholy will leave viewers a bit moved. It’s hard to look away from the episodes as it’s so tense and gripping thanks to the espionage sequences but, above all, the characters, their journey, and the consequences of their actions turn this spy thriller into an emotionally taxing experience.
Final Verdict

In the end, Black Doves Season 2 is simply fantastic. Knightley and Whishaw’s partnership, the action sequences, the sharper political backdrop, and a threat from inside keep the story moving. It’s a welcome return and is hard to put down for most of its runtime.
