The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 Review

The LoTR series was our charming new-age entry to Tolkien’s world. It did have its own set of inconsistencies but we were left hungry for more by the end of the first season. With the same arresting visuals and majestic stretch of the first season, the second season offers us something we have been wishing for a long time- clarity on the history and transfer of the rings.

Wasting no time, The Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power Season 2 Episode 1 opens with where things were left off in the first season. After discovering Halbrand’s real identity, Galadriel and Elrond are on two sides. The Elven fate lies in the hands of the rings but, the malice left by Halbrand is haunting enough for a distrusting atmosphere. While in the present we see what is happening for our main characters, the makers don’t forget to pull us back in the past to give us the Halbrand origin story which surely will stop all the Sauron conspiracy theories.

The journey Nori takes with The Stranger also continues. In this side of the story, things start to clear up with clear indications being given by The Stranger’s identity and purpose. The wholesomeness this time is less, with the duo being joined by Poppi but, it is always endearing to see the harfoot. But, things aren’t the best for our mountain-dwellers as season two kickstarts.

The Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power Season 2 does not fall short on visual imagery and cues. It not only builds a beautiful scenery with every frame. There is something so striking about how the colours go from golden to charcoal with the change of setting and character, that even the atmosphere feels like it is having a shift from warm to cool. Just like the previous season, the visuals are the stars of this season too, especially with the rings coming into focus more.

However, the second season is not just restricted to its beauty. It has a good flow when it comes to storytelling and character development and things seem intentional rather than being confusing and surface-level. Especially with characters like Halbrand, Galadriel, Elrond, The Stranger, Celebrimbor and some more, you understand how things are moving and, by the end, why they move in a particular way. There is some closure at the end, precisely due to the careful craft of storytelling where episodes are laid out with thought and attention. Of course, this is not to say that the end does not flabergasts you.

Additionally, the crew just adds to the charm of this Rings of Power world that is unfolding in front of our eyes. The costumes are on point and, so are the acting and delivery of some particularly emotional and difficult scenes. The cast will also be the backbone of this show and, no one can tell me otherwise.

Final Verdict

Overall, The Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power Season 2 is a hit for me! The one-hour-plus episodes are worth the world you are getting into and, for the OG LoTR fans, it opens so many windows for exploration and expression (also, to go down that rabbit hole for theories and stories behind all kinds of character development). But most, Rings of Power Season 2 continues to tell the unique story of everyone’s favourite fantasy- which is why it gets all the stars!
