Untamed Royals Review

The movie starts with Xavier and Gerardo concocting and going through a robbery at the former’s house, leaving their maid Mari bloodied and traumatised and Xavier with a bullet wound. The runtime following the horrifying incident catapults us into the minds of these young men and women as they commit one senseless act after another, seldom facing the consequences of their actions and leaving destruction in their wake.

Untamed Royals is an odd watch, more so because we don’t really understand the exact point of everything… at first. Is it to show how bratty rich kids can be? Or are they psychopaths? The vibes of this film will make you feel like this is some slow burn and will move to something truly horrific in the end. But the journey to the end is just so slow sometimes that it adds another layer to the term “slow burn”! The most mundane things happen at a snail’s pace, making the film sluggish and unwatchable sometimes. But, the patience pays off when things come together in the end, leaving you with many thoughts.

The slow pace can’t take away from the horrific events that unfold throughout the course of the film and although you are left a bit bored sometimes, the film makes sure to point out how disturbed these degenerate kids are. You know for a fact that they have never faced any consequences in life and are creating this chaos because they know they can get away with it. The showcase of violence that these kids exhibit is truly fascinating and concerning. It’s clear that none of them have any regard for human life whatsoever and their degeneracy expands into many different avenues in their lives as well, painting a vivid picture of how disturbed individuals cause chaos just for the heck of it.

Although the characters seem rather bland sometimes, there is some showcase of vulnerability that makes you see them in a new light. You can sort of connect the various things that they do one after another leaving you expecting the worst in the next scene. However, it’s the fallout of their actions that leave the deepest dents in viewers’ minds as one bad thing happens after another and it’s the less fortunate who have to constantly pay the price. The film is rather depressing and negative as nothing good ever happens but maybe that’s the truth of this world, which just makes things even sadder.

However, the film nails the showcase of the class divide in our society. The movie brings out the clear distinction between the “royals” & the “others,” painting a vivid picture of what it looks like to belong to the upper echelons of society where nothing can touch you. In that respect, the film gets extremely scary when you realize how deplorable and desperate these characters become. Considering the background of the kids, it’s clear that they understand that they won’t face the consequences while those working for them are hyper-aware of how vulnerable they are in front of their rich employers.

Untamed Royals, although slow, gets the tone right. Towards the end of the runtime, it delivers such a heartbreaking twist that viewers cannot help but be disturbed. We try to figure out why these kids are doing these things but the gist of it all is that – because they can. They are unbothered by the problems of the common folk because it’s a privilege to be unbothered in the face of these situations. The director makes it a point to not make anything too over-the-top, especially the sexual aspects of it while giving us enough of a look to showcase the depravity of it all.

Untamed Royals peeks behind the curtains to showcase how privilege, ingrained in the minds of the rich and famous, can affect everyone and everything around them. Although it’s a bit slow, some moments are heartbreaking and gripping, making this a memorable film that leaves you with many questions to face. The horrific acts of these kids simply destroy the lives of those who are less influential but the chilling showcase of how unbothered these kids are by the heartbreak and misfortune of others is the true horror, leaving you with a pit in your stomach.

I genuinely thought the movie was going to be an exploitative and sex-filled romp, but this one leaves you with some disturbing thoughts, surprisingly.
