The TikTok Killer Review

In this Netflix true crime series, we see the chilling story of Esther Estepa’s disappearance in 2023 and her family’s relentless search for the truth, even when authorities decided to take a backseat. The series highlights the importance of keeping an eye out for the people we associate with, especially when we are in a foreign place, and reiterates the importance of updating our loved ones about where we are.

Told using digital evidence that was left behind by the perpetrator, serial killer and TikTok creator José Jurado Montilla, the series does a fantastic job of recreating the scenario that led to Montilla’s arrest using everything that was left behind in plain sight after Estepa’s disappearance. It helps authorities reconstruct the truth while painting a vivid picture for the documentary’s viewers and making us emotionally invested in a young woman’s plights.

The series is quite straightforward, but it’s Montilla who truly leaves an odd chill down your spine as you watch him act heartbroken for Estepa’s death, when he himself was responsible for the horrendous crime. The man leaves you uneasy in your seat, and the revelations that come out one after another are told well in its two-episode runtime.

However, it’s Estepa’s family who truly leave an impact as we see them bringing out the truth as they interact with Montilla, hoping that he would reveal something that would help in the investigation. Once again, the authorities leave you disappointed, but it’s the family’s iron-clad resolve to find Esther and see justice being served that leaves you hopeful till the very end – maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel.

It’s, thus, an emotional affair as we see her family’s voices being prioritised in every scene. It’s never easy to lose a loved one, but when the circumstances are this horrifying, you can’t help but feel even more hopeless and heartbroken. The family’s strength absolutely deserves kudos, as without them, there might not have been any light shed on the victims who need it.

In the end, The TikTok Killer showcases how ordinary people’s determination can result in extraordinary things happening. The series is emotional and moving, and the way they use Montilla’s video logs on TikTok to tell the story and highlight his deplorable actions will give you chills. Although there are moments when the series might feel like it would’ve done well as a feature film, I think, at only two episodes, it does a good job with its time and gives us a good background for both the victim and the perpetrator.

The TikTok Killer is a moving documentary about a family’s determination to see justice served to their daughter’s killer. While the ending is somewhat satisfying, it’s the journey that leaves you with all the chills. Highlighting the intersection between social media and real-life personas and how the seemingly most ordinary people can turn out to be terrifying killers, this documentary is for anyone who needs a reality check and maybe rehashing a lesson on stranger danger.
