The Gray Man Review: Ryan Gosling-Chris Evans’ Action Thriller is Far Off From Reality and Logic

The Gray Man stars Ryan Gosling as Court Gentry/Sierra Six, Chris Evans as Lloyd Hansen, Ana de Armas as Dani Miranda, Jessica Henwick as Suzanne Brewer, Dhanush as Avik San, Regé-Jean Page as Denny Carmichael, Billy Bob Thornton as Donald Fitzroy and Julia Butters as Claire Fitzroy. It is based on Mark Greaney 2009 novel of the same name. The Netflix movie is directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo.

The screenplay is penned by Joe Russo, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The runtime of The Gray Man is 129 minutes. The synopsis reads, “When a shadowy CIA agent uncovers damning agency secrets, he’s hunted across the globe by a sociopathic rogue operative who’s put a bounty on his head.”

Netflix’s The Gray Man Review Contains No Spoilers

In the Netflix movie The Gray Man, we meet Court Gentry in 2003 in prison, being offered to work for the CIA. Eighteen years later, he’s named Sierra Six, one of the CIA mercenaries. On a big mission, Six learns that his agency, especially his boss Denny Carmichael is hiding some secrets. After the mission, Six is on the run to uncover more information.

Carmichael hires former agent Lloyd Hansen to capture Six. It’s a cat and mouse game between Hansen and Six which goes on in the end.

The plot of The Gray Man sounds quite simple. However, the Russo brothers and the writers have presented us with a screenplay that jumps from one place to another as if it’s in a hurry to catch the Mumbai local train. It travels to many different countries in a span of 2 hours.

The screenplay shifts from fight/chasing scenes to Six babysitting a young teenager, Claire Fitzroy, to action scenes. The babysitting part was added to show us the caring side of Six. But it really didn’t add any emotional value to the premise. Were the Russo brothers trying to pull off another Extraction? If yes, they failed to make an impact this time.

The Gray Man Still 1

When Six learns that his team is hiding something, I waited to know what are those dark secrets that made Carmichael hire a psychopath like Lloyd Hansen. Well, I was wrong to have any expectations because we never fully learn what’s happening.

The most shocking part was how there are times when Six is in a deadly situation, and yet, he’s safe and hardly injured. Sometimes, I felt like I was watching a Marvel movie with Ryan Gosling as a superhero.

In one scene, many cops and Lloyd’s men are firing at Six. But he isn’t hurt and manages to escape the situation. Chris Evans’ Lloyd Hansen is furious as he questions how long it takes to kill a handcuffed man! I relate to Evans’ aka Hansen’s anger in that scene. Anyone could’ve easily killed Six. But well, he’s a strong Avenger. I mean, a mercenary.

A lot of characters in The Gray Man on Netflix added very little to the story. Ana de Armas and Jessica Henwick’s Dani and Suzanne could’ve been written better. So much noise is made about Dhanush’s appearance in the movie. But by the time he appears, I wonder how many people will be interested in the story that doesn’t seem to go anywhere. All it does is travel from one place to another.

Ryan Gosling plays Six well, and I liked his character’s subtle, witty side. But an actor like him deserves a good story. Chris Evans’ performance as Lloyd Hansen is very weird. Lloyd becomes unbearable after a certain point.

The Gray Man Still 2

The Gray Man Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, The Gray Man doesn’t provide anything unique to the action thriller genre. It features numerous chase scenes, shooting scenes, aeroplane fight scenes, and an odd villain—everything that we have come to expect from spy or action thrillers. But you find the action-packed plot and “superhuman” characters unappealing.

The movie is far off from reality and logic. The plot drifts away from the initial chaos that started all this and doesn’t bring anything substantial till the end.

The Gray Man is streaming on Netflix.
