Now, this is what needed to be done to make the show interesting again. We needed an explanation that made it different from every other media that has featured this kind of story before, and we got it. There had to be more to this than Maou just taking a liking to the kid and allowing her to stay with him with his limited funds. It could still have been that, but it would have been much worse of a story if it was, as the last two episodes proved. This was a much better outing than both of them and probably matched, if not exceeded, the quality of an average Season 1 episode.

Let’s first talk about the plotline that the previous episode set up perfectly for this one- the trip to the amusement park. Alas Ramus, Maou, and Emi were absolutely perfect in this episode. The way they explored the park like a real couple alongside their child would was very fun to watch and did a lot for their relationship as a whole. The will-they-won’t-they dynamic that the two share was at its best when it had to be kept under wraps for the sake of Alas Ramus and the general public enjoying the park.

Also fun was the trio of Suzuki, Chiho, and Ashia following them on this excursion. They had an agenda to keep the couple in check for various reasons, and the chemistry between them was great. Chiho is getting more to do in this season than she got in the last one, and as someone who is a fan of her character and what she brings to the show, it doesn’t get better than this. Suzuki is also a great instigator and a really fun character to observe, being a minor nuisance to society. Combine that with a perennially underused Ashia getting a little love, and it was a very enjoyable time.

Also great about this episode was how it expanded upon Maou’s backstory and made him a much more fleshed-out character. We always knew that there was more to him than the reformed murderer that the show initially portrayed him as. People don’t usually have such quick turnarounds to be kind and careful just because they like living in a certain place. The kindness was always inside him altogether, and the audience, alongside Emi and the other faith warriors, never knew about any of that because they never really knew him.

The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 3 also featured the mysterious man we first saw come to earth in the previous episode, and he was also an extremely fun character. This is a show where most characters are very well written and likeable (except Lucifer, he can go back to hell for all I care), and he was just as good as all the rest of them. His importance to the plot also can’t be understated. Overall, this was a fantastic episode that featured the best that the show has to offer for the first time this season.
Verdict
The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 3 was a fantastic episode that might have just signalled the show’s return to form after a stint of uneventfulness. More of this, please!
