Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 4 Review: Protecting The Secret

A startling realisation hit us at the end of the last episode as we now know why the parallel story is necessary for Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 4. Let’s see where this episode leads us in this review!

Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 4 Overview

Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 4 Title

The best anime of 2017 and one of the greatest shows of this generation, Made in Abyss, makes a return to our screens with Made In Abyss Season 2, titled Made in Abyss Golden City of the Scorching Sun. The series is once again being helmed by veteran director Masayuki Kojima who also directed the previous seasons alongside other classic anime such as Monster and Black Bullet. The season is also referred to as Made in Abyss Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou in original Japanese.

The season is also being animated by Studio Kinema Citrus, which was behind the first season of the show alongside other shows like The Rising Of The Shield Hero. The series is based upon a manga written by Akihito Tsukushi. This episode is also known as Made in Abyss Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou Episode 4 and Made in Abyss Golden Sun Episode 4. Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 4 Review- Days In The Sun

Laputa Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 4

The wonder and glee each new episode of Made in Abyss brings to the greater world is a beautiful thing. It is almost as if the author is well aware of how good their writing and worldbuilding are and knows how to give just enough to the audience in each chapter or episode to keep them hooked and satisfied without leaving them feeling lied to or betrayed while still maintaining the mystery of the show, as well as of the abyss. Seldom has a writer understood his world to this level of detail while still maintaining multitudes that exist beyond our understanding.

The queen of hollows, the one with unlimited value and the one who cannot die, is a title that speaks volumes about the reverence the abyss has for that particular character and how little we still know about her an entire episode after she was introduced is a sad state of affairs. This is where the show could have gotten away with being a little too liberal with the information it chooses to share with us, as the means it used to preserve the secrecy seems costly. Reg ended up looking like a bit of an idiot when he let an opportunity of this magnitude slip through his fingers (or whatever those things are).

Riko Meinya Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 4

With the confidence the show has gained with its fandom so far, we can reasonably assume that this will lead to bigger and better things in the future, but that doesn’t reduce the slight disappointment that this episode caused. It is a good thing that multiple things were going on in the background that were just as interesting as what was happening with the queen (Laputa?) and Reg, as Riko and Nanachi both had their own horrible encounter inside this anomaly in the sixth layer of the abyss. It is a place that keeps on giving, and what we are receiving this time around seems to be gentle horror and a lot of mystery.

There are new characters emerging that are playing a bunch of different kinds of roles, the kinds which humans would have played if this were a different show or if our characters were in a different layer than one where it is impossible to come back alive as a breathing and functioning human being. Not knowing their language does three things- increase the dependency on context cues, the level of danger involved, and the instant relief when someone who speaks our language eventually does show up. It also helps that the language isn’t very complex and doesn’t have very many words.

Every review, when I come to this paragraph, I have to think about new ways to describe how good the production of this show is. The thing is, no matter how I describe it, I don’t think I can do enough justice to it. This specifically applies to the soundtrack, as even though we are mostly going through the classics like Hanazeve Caradhina that the original season also had, it feels almost ethereal. If you don’t feel elation as soon as the first notes of that song play, are you even human?

Verdict

Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 4 was a terrific episode that went slightly too far into trying to preserve the mystery by not caring about how the characters look while doing that.
