Indian Predator The Butcher of Delhi, true-crime documentary series was released on Netflix this week. The limited series traces the story of a notorious serial killer who ruthlessly dismembered his victims and scattered their body parts around India’s national capital, Delhi. There are 3 episodes in total with a runtime of about 41-44 minutes respectively.
Since the release of the documentary, it has created a discourse among the viewers who find the whole incident horrifying and some recall the time when they were keeping track of the case through newspapers and TV broadcasts. In fact, I remember reading news articles regarding it in the newspaper as a kid and it definitely terrified people from going out at night in Delhi.
How Many People Did The Butcher of Delhi Chandrakant Jha Kill?
In the Indian Predator The Butcher of Delhi documentary series, we saw that Chandrakant Jha was convicted of 3 murders and thus, sentenced to the death penalty which was commuted to life imprisonment. If you want to know about the 3 murders and how he was caught, then you can read our article here.
The three identified murders were Anil, Upendra and Dalip. They were the only ones whose body/parts were found thus they formed his case. Apart from them Chandrakant Jha also confessed to killing a man name Pandit in 1998, who was the supervisor of the hawkers and would take money from them to give to police and other maintenance.

Jha refused to give the money and they got into a fight where his vegetable knife injured Pandit’s hand. Furious by it, Pandit conspired with the police and got him imprisoned in a false case, where Jha was apparently harassed by officer Balbir Singh. He wouldn’t give him food and would strip him naked in front of others.
That’s when Jha determined to kill Pandit once he gets out and he did. He also confessed to killing 3 more people before 2006. How did he choose his prey, you ask? Well, he had a sharp mind and knew how to manipulate people. Initially, he would approach people who weren’t as well off as him and befriends them, feed them etc.
They weren’t befriended by the motivation of killing them but Jha was a peculiar man too, he hated people who lied to him or deceit him. So if he finds his ‘friends’ lying, stealing money from him or being perverted, he would kill them. That’s how in 2003, he murdered Shekhar because he wasn’t okay with Shekhar’s drinking and lying. Then he killed Umesh in the same year for betraying his trust, later throwing his body outside one of Tihar Jail’s gates, which went unidentified.

And in 2005, he killed someone named Guddu because he smoked marijuana. He would invite his victims over to his place, tie them up under the pretext of disciplining them, and then choke them to death. Sometimes, Chandrakant would even have dinner while the dead bodies lay in the same room.

Now, if you think that this is all the body count then you are in for a surprise. According to Chandrakant Jha’s childhood friends and neighbours, he might have killed more than 44 people. Well, it’s just a number they have assumed while they were with him, but the number could be even higher since he has claimed to murder 7-8 people at least in a year to keep his sanity.
The villagers claim that even as a kid, Jha would kill anyone who would lie to him and everyone in the documentary know at least 5 people that were killed by him. While living in Azadpur, Delhi, he even clicked pictures of his victims tied up and the people who might have witnessed it happening. As a safe keep to stop people from telling about him.

In 2003, he was planning to kill some of his village neighbours living in Delhi and had them tied up. He even called a man named Jadhav to help him kill them, but Jadhav made him go out to fetch some food and they all fled the scene with the camera that had their pictures. Even now, they fear that they might get killed by him if he gets out of Jail.
