Plot & Overview: Justice is Never Neutral
The story is centred around up-and-coming lawyer Neha Rajvansh, who, while waiting for a spot in her father’s law firm, is working as a public prosecutor. On the path to winning 10 consecutive cases and making a name for herself, she stumbles upon stenographer Sarika Rawat, who decides to help guide her on her journey to be a better defender of the law with her vast knowledge of the justice system. However, when a complicated murder case makes her go up against her own father, she realises that the law isn’t always about justice.
The film tries to focus on the contrast between the two characters – while Neha hails from a privileged background, Sarika’s struggles extend beyond financial hardships. While their friendship at first feels encouraging and engaging, System showcases how their differing opinions and worldviews influence one another. It’s Neha, though, who has a lot to learn as she slowly realises the intricacies of getting justice in a world that celebrates money and power.
Neha’s journey from a naive and hopeful prosecutor to a hardened enforcer of the law is an interesting one that makes her question not just the law in general, but also her father. It begs for a deeper investigation into buried injustices and systemic manipulation. We witness how truth is routinely manipulated beneath influence and status, and it leaves viewers feeling rather hopeless and desperate, much like Neha. This ideological rollercoaster ride becomes the pillar on which System operates, although the film, in the end, is quite straightforward.
Sonakshi Sinha is a Fiesty Lawyer
Sonakshi Sinha, as usual, is an enjoyable watch, and she brings forth Neha’s emotions with controlled intensity. At first hopeful, viewers will see how her bubble slowly bursts as she realises that ambition and morality rarely go hand in hand when the law is concerned. Neha is a flawed character, and Sinha brings forth her character’s intricacies beautifully.
On the other hand, Jyotika is the film’s emotional grounding and leaves you heartbroken for her. When the truth finally comes to light, it’s more impactful and hard-hitting thanks to the actor grounding her character so well. She isn’t written as the stereotypical voice of the common people but is, rather, someone who doesn’t hold back from fighting fire with fire.
Interesting Themes Add to the Mystery
The themes surrounding institutional manipulation ring loud and true in the courtroom drama film, wherein the stakes slowly increase with the runtime. We are constantly asked whether true justice is achievable in a system that is more concerned with power and influence, and that is brought up time and time again. The line blurs when the film asks for the definition of truth, as truth seems to only prevail if it can be proved.
The depiction of class divide and institutional hierarchy is also well discussed and dissected, though some obvious, clichéd moments will make viewers roll their eyes. The ambition gives the film relevance and makes you root for the characters regardless. The way in which the most innocent and simplistic characters are fine with selling their morals to achieve their goals is something that is rooted in reality, regardless of how depressing that might feel.
Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s Restrained Direction Does the Trick
The mystery surrounding Neha’s journey is hinted at from the beginning, with small clues coming together to create a situation that comes crashing down in the end. However, that doesn’t mean that the film is truly unique. In fact, there are a lot of obvious moments that tread familiar beats, and although the end twist is both surprising and emotional, it’s the path that leads to the revelation that leaves viewers somewhat unhappy.
That being said, the film shines because of its quieter moments and character interactions, giving this a more intimate twist. The internal conflicts are the heart of the show, but the conflict and solution are rather convenient and rushed. The film focuses too much on the quieter moments sometimes and misses out on creating an arresting watch that keeps you guessing. The family conflict and emotional ups and downs are given priority over creating a tense thriller, which starts to weigh the film down sometimes.
Final Verdict
System is an interesting watch that focuses on quiet reflection instead of loud moments. It’s not a new film and doesn’t reinvent the courtroom thriller genre, but it’s hearts is in the right place, and the performances help it stand out. The substance is compelling and hard-hitting, and although it’s not able to build good suspense, there’s enough mystery to keep things moving. Overall, it’s a great one-time watch.
